I don't know if I could make a blanket statement that Megadeth is better than Metallica. Master of Puppets is better than anything in Megadeth's catalogue, and you could POSSIBLY say the same for Ride the Lightning. They do basically follow the same career arc, starting primitive, getting more progressive, going commercial, getting terrible and then returning to their roots (clumsily at first, successful later). So...
Kill 'Em All > Killing Is My Business...
Peace Sells... > Ride the Lightning
Master of Puppets > So Far, So Good...
Rust in Peace > ...And Justice For All
Black Album > Countdown to Extinction
Load > Youthenasia (I'm gonna get killed for that one, I know)
ReLoad = Risk/Cryptic Writings (well, if you combine them they're equal)
WNAH/TSHF > St. Anger
U.A./Endgame ~= Death Magnetic
By my count, Metallica won the battle 4.5 to 3 (I counted DM as the .5) with 1 tie. I know most people will disagree with me on a lot of that list (mainly the last parts) but I think it's a pretty interesting debate.
Now, somebody else do the same thing and see what you come up with.

wow monster post, let me have a go:
Kill 'Em All > Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good
Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? > Ride The Lightning
Master Of Puppets > So Far, So Good, So What?
And after that I prefer every Megadeth album to whatever Metallica has done.
I'm the opposite to you; imo Peace Sells and Rust In Peace are better than all of Metallica's albums. Megadeth are hardly my favourite band though, I just prefer them to metallica

@FadeToBlack123: I obviously agree with those three album comparisons you did, and I can see how one might like Megadeth's later stuff than Metallica's. Megadeth stayed more metal for longer. I just think Metallica wrote some really, really good songs between Black Album and Load that often get forgotten in all of the raging done over the sonic shift. Funny though that your name is FadeToBlack but you like Megadeth so much more than 'Tallica.
@CrazyGreg: yeah, I figured a lot of people would disagree with me on that too. And honestly, I can't say that I don't feel the same way right now. Endgame is dominating my listening right now. I just have this feeling that as the "new album" phase wears off I will like Death Magnetic just slightly more.

haha yeah when I joined the site like all I listened to was Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica and Iced Earth lol. I still love their eariler albums, but really I've grown to hate the band themselves.

Yeah, most people do. I don't really care if they sued Napster or what they're like as people... I'm not sure why everyone else cares so much. Dave Mustaine's a giant douchebag for the most part and it doesn't stop many people from liking his music. I'm not saying this is the case with you, but there's something with metal fans that they are not allowed to like a band if they become popular with people they don't consider metal "purists." The fact that Metallica is hated has more to do with album sales than anything else, IMO.
That being said, they have released some borderline-embarrassing stuff (i.e. St. Anger...). But they're still one of my favorite bands because they flat-out write great songs (and they play for like 2 1/2 hours at every show -- I'm seeing them Thursday).

oh i don't care about all that napster stuff, I just don't like them. No idea why
still I want to see them live lol

aw, you've never seen them live? You have to, at least once. The problem these days is that they charge up the ass for tickets. I have floor tickets Thursday night and it cost me $150 per ticket. Brutal.
I saw Megadeth on what was supposedly their last tour (2001) with Endo (terrible band) at Pops in STL. Great show, but not quite a 'Tallica show.

I never truly appreciate a band unless I at least hear substantially evidence of them being able to pull off their work in a live setting in a satisfactory manner.
