Testament were pretty good both before and after this album but The Gathering was as close to perfection as they've come. I really believe it's their high water mark. That lineup was epic. It made for a classic release. Seemed like everybody loved this when it came out too...80's thrash purists, Gothenburg fans, crazy death metalheads, even the Nu Metal crowd. Testament were widely considered to be past their prime and antiquated when this dropped too. That changed overnight.
