I'm so over this band. Metropolis pt 2 is still cool though, I pull it out occasionally.

I kinda know the feeling. Over the past few months (probably since I last saw them) I've been slowly but steadily losing interest. There's so many other bands out there to discover, that I don't play them anywhere near as much as I used to. Don't get me wrong, they're still one of my favourite bands, but they're not my be-all-and-end-all favourite band like they were for a time.
So I probably won't be listening to them much in a year's time. Same thing that happenend with Metallica.

In another year you'll probably randomly rediscover them and like them again. Its funny how stuff like that works.
But anyway i haven't heard any DT at all, so can anyoe recommend a good song that would give me a general picture of what they are like?

7. Lines in the Sand ? To be honest, I have never sat through this whole song. I just can?t force myself to. It?s infinitely more boring than silence. DT brought in a guest singer for this one, Doug Pinnick of King?s X. The intro lasts so long it?s unacceptable. Keyboard leads into this one with a bit of a solo?.I feel bad for Derek Sherinian because this is the only full-length album he did with them, so he will always be remembered as the guy that made DT suck. This song continues for 12 minutes. Now, I expect 12 minute DT songs to have many many changes in pace and feeling, like the classics (Metropolis, Learning To Live, Voices, etc.). This one pretty much sticks with the sameness most of the way through, although there is a decent calm section with a mellow, bluesy solo. That part saves it from being a 1/5.
2/5
i hate how everybody blames derek sherinian for messing up dream theater . . . nobody ever considers that he helped to a change of seasons, which we all know by now is one of the greatest songs of our time . . .

I agree with you, that's the point I was getting at when I said that. Guess it didn't come out right.

meh. this album was alright. it did seem like you bashed it pretty well solely on the basis that it was too "poppy." i'll agree with you, Kaden, up to a point. but I think that peruvian skies deserves at least a 4/5. that song was really, really good. wasnt this album their mainstream effort or something? (not sure if someone already mentioned it)

I bought this cd for two bucks at a yard sale. I want them back.

Did anyone else find Burning My Soul to sound too much like The Thing That Should Not Be by Metallica?

You guys are being way too critical of this CD. Although it is not on par with any other DT releases, it is still not just a heaping pile of crap or something. I mean, "Hell's Kitchen", "Lines in the Sand", and "Trial of Tears" are great songs, "Just Let Me Breathe", "Burning My Soul", and "New Millinneum" aren't terrible, and "Anna Lee" is pretty underrated. And though ballads may not be your thing (they certainly aren't mine), "Hollow Years" is a good contribution by the band and was improved much on the "Live at Budokan" release. The band has plenty of worthwhile excuses for the lackluster qualities of this CD; the management and record label were undergoing changes, and pretty much any one in the business that Dream Theater had befriended was had been supported by had left them. This album is a result of nearly 2 years of built up frusturations, and it almost caused the end of the band. Luckily, they moved on and created their best disc with Scenes from a Memory. Anyhoo, don't dismiss this CD too quickly, but don't start trying to get into DT with Falling into Infinity.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of their earlier stuff. Even Images and Words had its corny parts on it...*cough* James Labrie on Take the Time *cough*.
Seeing their early videos makes it even worse. Trying to fit in with late 80's/early 90's pop....BAD, BAD!

Just to be nitpicky, this review labels the album as pop. If you were to review this in context of prog, the album is mediocre at best, but as for pop, I'd say it's rather good. It all depends on how you want to look at the album.

For me, this albums pretty much redeems itself because of what they can do with the songs when played live. The intro solo added in Hollow Years especially is great.

i loved this album

This album is a disaster. I have nothing more to say.
|

Oh come on, it isn't that horrible. I actually thought Take Away My Pain would make a nice pop song, with the split second solo of Petrucci's.
|
| |
I haven't heard this, but Hollow Years on Live at Budokan is awesome. And no amount of atrocious lyrics could ever be worse than LaBrie's disasterpiece, Sacrificed Sons.

Yea this album is not that great, but I disagree with your rating of Burning my Soul, I love this song, it is one of my favorites by Dream Theater. I also diagree with your rating of Lines in the Sand, This song deserves a 3.5/5. This Message Edited On 10.20.05

Falling Into Infinity should not be avoided. When Day and Dream Unite should be avoided. Charlie Dominici was the worst thing to happen to this group of stellar musicians.

Yes, it's not amazing for DT's standards, but this album IMO is incredible all the same. Trial of Tears is one of my all time fave DT songs. This album doesn't get enough credit, even if it is some of there worst works.
