"A Violent Whisper" is The Arcane Insignia's sophomore offering, a creation forged upon the torments and sufferings endured by Lodrö Nyima within the last several years. A piece of his heart offered up to the rest of the world, the album is a tour de force exploring themes of suffering, heartbreak, personal tragedy, and ultimately, perseverance.
An album in two parts, the first half seamlessly blends influences of djent, progressive metal, hardcore, and folk music into a wholly unique creation that has become The Arcane Insignia's signature sound. Emotion-packed melismas collide into powerful screams and banshee howls, exhibiting Lodrö's incredible range. His vocal capacities have improved immensely from their debut release. It is truly astounding the sounds he is capable of producing. Extended techniques on both guitar and cello are heard, and the instruments ranges' are pushed to their limits. Tremendous emotional catharsis abounds throughout the constant interplay of tension and release. The second half moves into more of a ballad/classical setting, helping to bring an intimacy and vulnerability that gets buried amongst the virtuoso stylings of the first half of the album. The folk and classical elements really shine here, and yet one can still constantly hear the vast influences of all the other genres sneak their way into these songs.
Overall, this is a very powerful and emotional album, uncompromising in its pursuit of higher meaning. The production is pristine, the performances unmatched, and the songwriting in a league of its own. That being said, the album can be fairly overwhelming in its weight, and the relentless nature of the first half of the album might be too much for a casual listen. In order to fully appreciate these compositions, the album should be taken in its entirety through a mindful and purposeful listen, while maintaining awareness that the torrential waves of energy that permeate the first half do not find some sense of solace or reprieve until the latter half of the album.
