Can someone explain to me what makes this album get a 4.3? I mean everyone on this site is giving it between a 4 and a 5 besides, like, two 3.5's. However, I bought this a month ago after reading great review after great review and feel i wasted my money. This "amazing, crushing, epic song" that is In Fiction is the same riff for the first four minutes with a slow drum beat and music effects in the background, which makes it more boring than epic for me.
I just don't understand how listeners who like this also recommend Between the Buried and Me, BTBAM has significantly more musical skill, faster and heavier songs, and constant vocals while in each of these 8ish minute songs there are maybe 20 words. For example, In Fiction's lyrics:
"Through fiction we saw The Birth
Of Futures Yet to come
Yet in Fiction lay the Bones
Ugly in their nakedness
Yet under this Mortal Sun
We cannot hide Ourselves"
As epic as these lyrics are, they're hardly audible with how distorted the vocals are.
At first I thought just giving it more listens would help me see what everyone else sees, and I've spent hours upon hours with this cd in my car stereo and have listened to it from start to finish multiple times but see nothing in this album.

Its because of atmosphere of the album. I find it quite beautiful. I think you're coming in with
the perspective that metal = brootalz/shred and that isnt always the case. I can understand why
people dont like this though, its an album that you have to work for. it's goal isnt to dazzle you
right off the bat, its more subdued and requires a lot of patience. This Message Edited On 05.07.09

I just bought a random album that I heard was good, and it turned out to be this. From the looks of this review it sounds like it will be a 20 bucks well spent.

Unfortunately I have to live with being ripped off on cd's for the next three years of my life when im 18 so I can buy things off of the internet.
My parents and online purchases dont go well together.

My brother just had this on the other day, and I was liking it. Which suprised me, because I've listened to Oceanic and didn't like it much. Will definitely be listening to this more.

Definitely a very good album even if it can get boring at times. That's what you get with drone Metal, though.

Haha! No, believe me, I like the band a lot. Just, to me, there are some boring parts. Definitely no shredding, which doesn't belong on this album. Some songs just drag sometimes, which is common for this type of music. Honestly, I only listen to this album when I wanna mellow out. But, like I said, this is a great album.

The album is meant more as a sonic hypnotic journey.

That's for damn sure. Any time I go to sleep listening to this, my dreams turn into acid trips, lol.

Tbqh I hear where you're coming from with the boring parts on this album. Trust in the_wizard: this will pass in time once you explore this album a bit more carefully. This type of music is very challenging, but can be very rewarding to anyone willing enough to give Isis or any other one of these types of bands a fair chance.
