this album is kind of insane lol. only when you're guaranteed millions of sales would you even think of releasing something this long, self-involved without any obvious hits. I kind of respect it, both for being an obvious future underdog and making absolutely no concessions to the audience whatsoever, but a lot of the obvious criticisms definitely ring true
I guess a breakup album about Matty Healy naturally is gonna feature some bad lyrics but these are truly awful and way too wordy for the songs most of the time? can't think of an album in recent memory that's crying out more for an editor. for some reason the bonus/second disc has most of the highlights too, Black Dog and the closing three song run are all really good. first disc is an absolute slog, Antonoff strikes again

It’s a lot like how Dark Souls, and other games by developer FromSoftware, approach their storytelling. The Tortured Poets Department is a confusing, off-putting experience, one that requires a deep dive to understand. Especially grating tracks like “Florida!!!” are akin to the notorious poison swamps of many FromSoftware games. It’s an incredibly risky yet confident statement from Swift that makes me see TTPD in a more positive light

^ True, and that gets to one of the biggest issues with the album. She really doesn't have much of anything to lament here compared to previous albums, so the whole experience is just her desperately reaching for the smallest nuggets of sorrow or relationship woes to fill out an album. And when the album in question is two fucking hours long... yeah, that stretches thin really quickly

we, as a whole, need to discuss the fact that many of the indie darlings this website supports make music/lyrics equally dreadful to this album
