"but I eventually settled on this score, because Pale Iris exists and it's just not a good song at all."
yeah ill likely always wish it wasnt here lol. i would get rid of it entirely, and move blue reverie to the penultimate. that way the album still maintains the cycle of flipping tunings with each song

definitely not a 4.5 album, more like a solid 3 at best. Erras weakest album to date. Big boy sad

what about neon and drift do you like more than this? i find it much better than those two

i wonder how heavy a hand braunstein had in writing these songs. JT’s verse on rumor of light has the exact cadence of michael barr on the last volumes album (also produced by braunstein)

drift has the technicality that was their signature up to this point plus catchy af hooks and lush soundscapes, all in all a way better album

@gmber loll thanks dude
@toomany yeah they've said braunstein had the most input of any producer they'd ever had. all those synths on slow sour bleed are him

Bubs I admire your admiration (lol) for their creativity and some of your explanations I had not yet picked up on were great nuggets as well. However I find myself in the camp of “they saw something and went for it, tried it, and you either love it or you don’t”.
For all the attention to detail you mention I feel like none of it really comes across much. As has been stated by others a ton, it feels vanilla and lifeless a lot. I find when music goes for an “aesthetic” it has to connect in a deeper perhaps more emotional way for me to resonate with it. This did not sans Glimpse.
I am glad some are really digging though. Maybe I’ll come around, but unfortunately this also seems to be one I have zero desire to return to (unlike say Heavener)

JT's lows at the end of End to Excess makes me want him to pull them out a lot more

pos'd tf out of this review
still not entirely sure how i feel or where i'd rank this among their discog. the production makes this thing really replayable and i think that on its own puts this above neon at the very least. prob drift too.
i don't really vibe with the industrial elements on here, but would say that's a personal taste thing rather than subpar execution on erra's end.
the run from glimpse through end of excess is the best on the album i think. really love past life persona
