I’m still not sure it’s a bad thing on that song per se, but I’m having a hard time pinning down my feelings for it due to that association. I do think some of the lyrics on it are unflatteringly generic, especially in the context of a more generic melody/chord progression and the very simple instrumentation.

It kind of reminds me of how I love the song “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” by Death Cab For Cutie but hate just about every cover version I’ve heard because they unfailingly take source material that is already just shy of being too saccharine over the line.

Opening two tracks had me thinking this would be an easy contender for AOTY (so far). The rest of the album is still (mostly) marvelous but it does kind of "settle" into a groove that's a little more comfortable and less outwardly vulnerable/immediate than the opener and its follow-up. I loved SONGS and think this is the superior album, by a nose hair.
