Guess I should hear this? Didn't expect a new JP record to be positively received here lol

I'm not kidding when I say this album absolutely rules even when you throw out the curve of them being in their 70's. Unbelievable accomplishment. Puts pretty much every other legacy artist to shame

Good album with some seriously tasty guitar playing. Giants In the Sky slaps fucking hard. Will probably give this a 4 on repeat listens.

"Nostradamus and the ripper albums would like a word"

Jugulator has t/t, Bullet Train, Burn in Hell, Death Row, and Cathedral spires, which by my count is five bangers, even if the album overall has Ripper's usual obnoxious lifted-truck-energy

Lol yeah Ripper was not a particularly good vocalist
I'll check this eventually but ngl I actually wasn't super fond of Firepower either so who knows if i'll dig this

Probably not. This has the same streamlined energy as Firepower and it’s hard for me to figure out which album is better. The first half of this and Sons of Thunder owns tho

If somehow Maiden could put out one last album of this quality, I would shit my fucking pants with delight.

yeah Maiden was riding higher when their latest albums were Book of Souls and Redeemer, but Priest have def flipped the script since. Both still slay live though.

Sad Wings, Angel of Retribution and Defenders might be my top 3.

Firepower and Screaming might take out Angel but there’s a few songs that don’t do it for me. I’m sure I’m forgetting an obvious album though.

I've always been more of a Maiden guy so I'd rank Book of Souls and Brave New World (unironically my favorite Maiden after Seventh Son) over any of the JP comeback albums, but that's not a knock on how great Firepower and this album are at all. Still the two best classic metal bands around (I'd include Mercyful Fate/King Diamond in there but we may never see another album from either).

King Diamond should have a new album... soon.

Maiden's biggest issue is that they just completely lack any editing whatsoever with their last few albums. If they could tighten the screws a little bit with their next album, I have no doubt that they could still eek out a winner. Even still, Book of Souls ripped. While Senjutsu definitely showed signs of them slowing down and showing their age a bit more, it was still a great time.

I am not sure what sort of black magic Priest have conducted in order to sound this youthful though. It legitimately sounds like this and Firepower were lost albums from the height of their powers. Legitimately blown away at how good this is

Senjutsu definitely shows their age. Firepower or this one don't but you gotta take on account that Maiden is playing with their OG line up while Priest had young blood infused not long ago.

Halford vs. Dickinson would be another discussion, well, if there's ever any, it's pretty clear what's the verdict there.

Dare I say there’s a metric shit ton of studio wizardry going on here but at this point who cares. It’s not like Halford is sounding like T-Pain on these tracks so it works.

I don’t see a reason why Maiden couldn’t release something like this. By all accounts Dave, Steve, and Bruce seem to be in real good shape…

Yeah, Maiden's recent shows have still been really energetic and lively despite the members' ages. As Odal said, the biggest issue with their studio material is just how bloated it is, and how unwilling the band are to send any of it to the cutting room floor. And while Senjutsu is technically shorter than Book of Souls, I think it's still the most egregious example of that issue. Seriously, three 10+ minute songs placed at the very end? They couldn't space those songs out at all?

They are but listening to Dickinson's latest solo album would probably answer that question. That, combined with Steve Harris obsession with looooong and intrincated songwriting is basically the reason why they haven't been able to distil the essence of some of their best albums into the modern era.
