Yeah, these guys were never that good

Their downfall isn’t exactly a surprise to me

Damn, terrible takes on this album. Seems overly harsh.

While I agree with the lack of payoff with the built up tension for some tracks (especially the opener and closer), this album has a good amount of depth and experimentation.

The songwriting is good and the production is gorgeous. Side B of the album is filled with some of the harder hitting, rock-tinged efforts that most people are looking for.

I'm afraid these dudes have nothing to offer anymore. Even if crawler is a little better than mono, I'll always be a fan of joy. That was it for me. Still will prob give this a shot.

Their “Live at La Bataclan” album still rips.

This review is spot on. The worst thing about this album isn't the ideas themselves, its just that they don't go anywhere. I can't think of a single song on this album that develops and grows into some cool moment.

They pretty much just mellow out and stop. I find the album ok but realistically the desire to revisit this is almost nil.

Yeah, this "Radiohead without the skill or innovation or songwriting chops" thing they're trying to do on some songs doesn't work. It's frustrating that most of these are so one note as well. The songs just don't really evolve. The instruments all across the board in the punk songs are just weaker compared to earlier material. The sequencing could have been rearranged with some of the punkier tunes earlier to help with the pacing and keep the front half from being so ZZZ sleepy. The mix of soft rock with pop vocal melodies with the damn near toothless post punk creates a stylistic disconnect. The execution of both styles on their own is lacking and they don't really gel together either. The gutless closer hits like a fistful of melatonin. The random unaccompanied sax at the end of the record was just kinda pathetic and not any kind of payoff at all. Almost as if they expected people to think it's profound simply based off its inclusion. It's not really bad, it's just another entry in a series of disappointments. Their most unassuming material to date, without a doubt. Almost entirely bereft of energy fr. I could really leave every album after Joy and feel okay.

idles encounters the same level of vitriolic hate here that king gizzard encounters and its fucking hilarious. still have to figure out if its because they are both internet popular or nah.

Eh, I love Brutalism and they were one of my favorite modern post punk bands coming off of Joy. I feel like Reviewbrah. "My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined."

see the key to having my level of success is to not ever have expectations at all (apathy) because there are tons of other bands out there and new and exciting acts come out all the time

the difference between idles and gizzard is that idles had two really good albums under their belt before turning into a parody of themselves.

easily their worst album, ultra mono had a fair few duds but it also had some decent cuts like mr motivator, model village and grounds. there are zero highlights here, it's one intangible mess of dull apathy after another. like this sounds like a parody band consisting of middle-class oap's trying to sound punk singing about their buy-to-let investments. i cannot remember a single exciting guitar riff or memorable lyric here at all. the last one was decent because it made up for it's shortcomings in energy with a natural evolution, but this is so much of a nothingburger it's painful. i wasn't expecting to ever get another 1049 gotho because half this band is pushing 40 at this point i believe but come on you can sound like you actually want to be in a fucking band.

Yeah dude, my sentiments pm exactly. Like the fact that we don't have a single memorable guitar part like the quirky lead in Danny Nadelko or something of that ilk is criminal.

Wtf is pop pop pop? My coworker jammed Ultra Mono a ton and it was an ok jam, this is just kinda weird and I'm not sure I get it.

Roy at least had a little bit of a payoff but that one was probably one of the worst ones as well.

Yeah, that was me who said it and it's ear-grating and atrocious! I couldn't even finish that track
