They were always at least like reliably decent. It’s the closest thing to punk that some of my friends will listen to. But this is just… not good

"Personally I don't really care if their music is complex, evolved, regressed, simple, calming, energetic whatever as long as it sounds good. Maybe I'm missing the critique here, but I kinda enjoyed this album for whatever the hell it's trying to be."

On first listen I was intrigued and I didn't expect that - thought they'd be well and truly stuck in a rut
Godrich production...not always a ticket to success, sometimes hampers an album (it didn't suit Pavement on 'Terror Twilight' for example).
Reserving final judgment until at least four listens I'd think

Nah, its pretty good tbh

@flugmorph
well said. I think the fun for me with dissecting art is figuring out what the artist was going for and figuring out if that goal is worth it and if they achieved it. Ultimately, if something sounds good to me, I like it even if it's outside someone's normal wheelhouse. I feel like Idles have been screaming they aren't "just" punk for half a decade now lol

Joy and Brutalism are all you really need from this band. They haven't really interested me since Joy tbh

After listening to this twice I've got to say that you're wrong, fellas

This band has always been vastly overrated bullshit for people who can’t differentiate between a socially relevant ‘image’ and good music
but yeah they’ve been getting worse of late

I really loved Crawler, kind of bummed with the direction here after a few listens. It's like the decided to not do any of their strengths.

humour (in both content and delivery) seemed to be a huge component on the debut…then less and less since?

I like them more when they pretend to be a punk band.
Think this is decent anyway

I actually adore Tranquility base but that album works because Alex Turner can pull off ridiculous lyrics.
The dude from Idles sounds like the guy from the pub up the road. Awesome when he’s yelling and stomping around but he ain’t no crooner.
