cheerios all!

@fluggy/daves: they can evolve as much as they want, but man they gotta up their execution game

@brandaao: i feel like there's an underlying arrogance around the band, esp. with the whole "we're SO MUCH MORE than a punk band" vibe. they never really proved they were more than a tight live band that excels at letting cooked-up rage explodes in big big fashion. everything else they tried has left me lukewarm at the very best

they don't want to be a punk band? oh god the arrogance!

This band's fall from grace is unlike anything I've seen in recent memory. The sheer hype around them off the back of Brutalism and Joy was something else, it felt special seeing them live and they had the tunes to back it up. What a shame.

@dedex I would say they're ambitious in the sense that they want to be more than a Punk Band. But I never saw/read about them acting with superiority over that.

Having listened to it for the 3rd time what I'm getting an impression is that this would benefit a lot with a rearrangement of the track list.

Would say this is a solid 3.5 though. Let's see how it evolves over time.

Totally bereft of any decent or interesting ideas. They did the thing Pavement and Arcade Fire did when they were lost, hire Nigel Goodrich. But he's a producer, not a miracle worker.

Pretty sure they hired Nigel Goodrich because they have become big enough and because they could.

Also, arrogant for wanting to evolve and be more than a punk band? I thought we usually criticized bands for not evolving over time, did I miss something here? XD

Evolution is good, this isn't an evolution. It's a regression if anything. Why are we pretending reheated dance punk leftovers are exciting? This sounds like their really, really early stuff if anything.

Personally I don't really care if their music is complex, evolved, regressed, simple, calming, energetic whatever as long as it sounds good. Maybe I'm missing the critique here, but I kinda enjoyed this album for whatever the hell it's trying to be.

Well, I mean, that "not a fucking punk band" statement informs a lot of why and how they're on the decline, not that they need to stay in the genre ghetto. I hope they find their ground soon because if every review/feature just talks about how politically conscious they are without a mention of the music (not that yours did that, dedex, talking elsewhere), it's a bit of a red flag.

Definitely a different approach and sound for these guys, not as good as some of their other records but still very listenable.

I'm so underwhelmed by the band these days, I'm not sure I'll even bother listening.

this is the way to go for all music and media enjoyment honestly, based take.

trying to figure out what they wanted to achieve with a piece of art and rating it on the basis of how well they got there is a much more interesting way of looking at art than simply going off of your own expectations.

I've felt everything they do (even the well regarded stuff) is very one and done and disposable tbh.
