I was already thinking the same thing about Unseen World, the first verse feels kinda bland but once that huge synth kicks in the song just keeps picking up momentum until the end. I loved it.
And yeah Place in the Sun was incredible. Definitely my favorite on first listen. I really liked The Liminal and Salt too. The only track that really didn’t leave a big impression on me was Eyes Like Nightshade. I think that song feels the most left field out of all of these tracks. I’ll probably like it more on a second listen.
Thought it was kinda weird that Place in the Sun didn’t transition more seamlessly into Dusk. The intro on Dusk sounds like another song was leading into it.

I really really like it though. I don’t think it’ll end up being my favorite of hers, but it’s really fucking good.
I need some lyrics! My record didn’t ship until yesterday so it probably won’t be here til next week.

Eyes Like Nightshade keeps giving me Bjork vibes with those beats, really like it, and yeah Unseen World's BIG synths is what made my jaw drop. Anna Von Hausswolff moment right there.
Place in the Sun and Dusk are my favorites. Along with Tunnel Lights, and I love the uptempo of House of Self-Undoing.

Yeah I really love Unseen World. I don’t think it’s the best song on the record but I really feel like it’s the one I’ll come back to most. 1:15 or so through the end is just some of Chelsea’s best shit ever.
I’ll have to listen to Anna Von Hausswolff, I’ve never heard of her.

oh dude get on Dead Magic ASAP

The Abyss has been my favorite Chelsea Wolfe album for as long as it has existed. I could easily see this rising above the rest to take its place as a second favorite (if not, I daresay, my favorite) after repeated visits. Heartbreaking yet uplifting and such a departure from her usual style while still remaining completely and authentically Chelsea Wolfe. Fantastic album from start to finish.

Yeah, Dead Magic is to start with, it’s gonna be a fantastic.

total neutral artist for me but I can respect the atmosphere, don't connect with the songs - same as ever
| | | Album Rating: 5.0
Same as it ever was, Doof. Yeah if she never clicked with you this won't change that. Good on you for giving it a check though.
| | | Album Rating: 3.0
she's good, I can tell that much
it's a solid listen, some of the atmospheric touches are great, she's operating in a niche that makes sense
it lands in the box of 'well crafted' for me but I can't think of when I'd reach for it
if she's done more of a pop album strangely that would probably be my favourite
| | | Album Rating: 3.5
I'm not totally neutral on Chelsea but I fail to connect to most of her music on any meaningful, or emotional level.
Obsessed with Dusk tho, was looking forward to this release and review got me suitably hyped but will probably just jam this until the dust settles.
Lovely review anyway

'I’ll have to listen to Anna Von Hausswolff, I’ve never heard of her.'
yes, she's amazing. Do it!

'Dusk' was definitely a highlight at the end yeah
this is very different to Anna Von Hausswolff but I guess there is some overlap of appeal and maybe aesthetic, her stuff is consistently really powerful...yes, even the church organ album !

Kind of agree with Doof here, I couldn't really connect with Chelsea's music before and this MIGHT be the same despite being competently constructed, idk yet...
if I had to pick faves on an initial impression there appears to be a greater concentration of cuts that may eventually appeal in the second half, this didn't start off strong for me. Place In The Sun was pretty good. Salt and Nightshade perhaps have potential. There are enough positive thoughts to give this another couple of spins (minimum), for sure

yeah, I wasn't attempting to compare them... in fact it irks me somewhat that they're ever placed in the same 'space', lol

descriptor comparison challenge on RYM...
Dead Magic = funereal, sombre, atmospheric, female vocalist, ethereal, dark, nocturnal, mysterious, ritualistic, ominous, spiritual, anxious, passionate, cryptic, occult, melancholic, dense, suspenseful, progressive, scary, cold, eclectic
This album = mechanical, ethereal, atmospheric, cold, female vocalist, melancholic, dense, rhythmic, poetic, sombre, ominous, introspective, existential, nocturnal, dark, hypnotic, serious, suspenseful, mysterious, spiritual
lot of perceived overlap on the ol' aesthetic/emotion/atmospheres there - 'goth aligned' I guess is the summary for both

To be clear, the Anna Von Hausswolff name drop just came from a very specific synth organ part in one of the songs (Unseen World) that reminded me of Anna's organ stuff. That's all! XD

To be clear, it wasn't a critique of anything you have written, just a general thing as it does happen... (only commented on Anna because I saw that Wildcard was potentially interested in her music, then Doof said quite rightly that they're not necessarily THAT comparable)
Doof: sure, there's an aesthetic 'gothic' overlap or whatever, but using RYM tags to compare two artists is a mostly futile endeavour because some of those tags come up so regularly (often for music that essentially has very little in common) that they essentially become meaningless, lol

Demon - how dare you, most scientific comparison available
| | | Album Rating: 3.0
The tags themselves are fine for descriptive purposes (even if some are massively overused), just that using them as a direct comparison between two artists / releases is a hugely flawed 'science' I reckon
