first three-four tracks on this are pretty enlivening stuff, had a lot of fun

and then watched the rest of the tracklist fall off a cliff. album's heart is in the right place but it just doesn't have the energy to see off so much songwriting this half-arsed. shame - still far, far better than that shithouse new Blink record

This is fucking awful.

There’s absolutely no excuse but then again Green Day have always been the same, throwaway as fuck.

I will always love Longview though.

Yeah no doubt this isn't the most creative or even...good...stuff, but I'm bopping to it for the most part. I've been drawn to a lot of the songs that aren't being mentioned a lot, like Suzie Chapstick and Goodnight Adeline.

To me, Green Day in and of themselves are almost a cringe proposition in and of themselves

Green day really have been the saviors of punk rock, and really just rock and roll in general, for decades now.

My 2 listens in, too-tired-to-type- actually-interesting-thoughts hot take:

1. "The American Dream Is Killing Me" - Great choice for a lead single and album opener. Nothing super special about it but it's very catchy and does a nice job of subtly calling back to American Idiot while updating the concerns. - 3.7/5

2. "Look Ma, No Brains!" - The return to pure punk we've been clamoring for. Lyrics are fun, energy is dialed up, hooks are off the chart. Their best song in this vein since St. Jimmy. - 4.5/5

3. "Bobby Sox" - I hear Nirvana on this track just as much as I do Weezer. Enjoying the grungy vibe and heavier vox. - 3.5/5

4. "One Eyed Bastard" - Lazy chorus and stupid lyrics downgrade what is otherwise a pretty fun tune. - 2.7/5

5. "Dilemma" - Up there with No Brains for best song on the album. Again, I really dig when Billie Joe breaks out the heavier vocals and this is executed even better / more naturally than on Bobby Sox. Melody is killer to boot. - 4.5/5

6. "1981" - An upbeat pop-punky song that is fun in the moment but not all that memorable. It gets points for its energy though. - 3.3/5

7. "Goodnight Adeline" - Beautiful and forlorn, one of the album's best melodies. Feels like a hidden gem. - 4/5

8.. "Coma City" - This one's bursting with energy. It's nice to hear something this exciting and upbeat from the band that isn't political. - 4/5

9. "Corvette Summer" - I've seen some early hype for this song but I don't really get it. Moreso than most GD songs, this really feels like it was made for a commercial or something. Very boring and sterile. - 2.5/5

10. "Suzie Chapstick" - See Adeline. This is smoother than it has any right to be, another diamond. - 4/5

11. "Strange Days Are Here to Stay" - I'm enjoying the political songs on this because they feel less finger-pointy and more "we're all fucked and in this together". - 3.5/5

12. "Living in the '20s" - I'm sure he could have picked any lyrics that would have been better than "ain't that a kick in the head", but this still hits the mark anyway because the verses are strong and Billie kills it with the escalation in vocal intensity once more. - 3.5/5

13. "Father to a Son" - Surprisingly poignant/moving moment. Who knew strings could do so much for them? Definitely one of my new favorite GD songs. - 4.2/5

14. "Saviors" - This just feels like it was written for the penultimate slot. Very wistful and melodic but not lacking for energy. Love the lyric "everyone's asleep but nobody's dreaming" as a commentary for the world at large. - 3.7/5

15. "Fancy Sauce" - This is a song that I want to like more than I do. It just doesn't seem like it accomplishes what it aims for. It's almost weird, almost humorous, almost epic, but not really any of those things and is surprisingly unmemorable considering the homage to Nirvana and overall stakes as a closer for their "return to form" album. It's aight. - 3/5
