I appreciate that you wrote the whole album name every time, though, that's a nice touch.
Also this is not thrash, nor it wants to be.

I stg if this were produced competently and I wasn't subjected to that stupid fucking title it could be a 3.0, maybe even a soft 3.5. Chugga chugga riffs are lame but they're at least serviceable if they CHUG

I think the review is fundamentally wrong - they’re not trying to be heavy like Slayer, that would be patently ridiculous for a band with their established ‘thing’, it’s their take on thrash that still feels very much part of their aesthetic hence the production.
I’d say closer to early Motörhead in vibe than Slayer or ‘Tallica if we need a comparison, still some vintage hard rock plus also some psychedelic sound in there (again vintage sounding), they still sound stoner (no one ever said Slayer or Metallica sounded 'stoner metal')

It imposes an ideal on a record that the record isn’t seeking to attain and the uses that as leverage for criticism ye. I don’t think that makes the criticism wrong - if you like the ideal, and think that this ought to strive for that, and don’t like the fact that this falls short of that, then it’s a valid line of attack - but i agree it’s awkward framing (feels like you’re not engaging with the record on the record’s terms). I enjoyed the write up though.

True, it isn't a terribly written or argued review...just the central assertion and various comparisons are a bit redundant.

always choose the Field
agreed that the review's stylistic footing is not nearly as solid as it might have been (and all that rly needs to be done is namedrop Motorhead, Voivod, Tool, and run) but is still somehow far more convincing than any of the dorky theses I've seen framed as "WOW another new album from this band??? lol fun riffs" - at least this one tries to get under the hood

I wonder what the hit rate is on albums commonly described as having 'fun riffs' are, usually combined with 'doesn't reinvent the wheel' buuuuuuut 'they make it their own'...
and is it more than 1%? Asking for a friend

the band are 'goofy but also have muso chops and a very loyal fanbase'...that reminds me of Clutch a bit I guess
you can't get too serious when you think about the music of Clutch and so it is here, but also you can't deny they have something - they're not as disposable and tongue in cheek as might be first anticipated
These lads do tire me out a bit more than Clutch though and some of their albums are a real drag
They feel like a band that are knowingly 'for proper music fans or musicians' ahead of uh, regular folk, and that always has the potential to be a bit gross so I get the backlash against them to some extent.
