"50% of his voice is the Mars Volta/At the Drive-In singer…never been sure what the other 50% is-- something a lot more indie"

Coincidentally enough, Jim Ward

haha, that seems really accurate listening to his voice now - he's spliced two vocalists from one band, ingenious

So no one else thinks this guy sounds a bit like the vocalist from Chiodos? Lol

Erkling, David, and Dustine is one hell of a trio

I do think that over time Joe has either given less consideration to how his voice's limitations fit into the music or actively wants to push it to the brink.

Cymbals and the first EC album had a few moments where he got to the boundary, but this one finds his voice practically living on the brink. I could see how it would be a challenging listen for newcomers to his work, but I love it.

I think it would be a bit remiss to check this album out without hearing the first one. The debut EC album is anchored much more by the songs being songs, with even stickier melodies that make it sound more like his stab at americana canon. I think II's money is made from being so willing to get a little whacky and weird and embrace the dizzying journeys that each track offers. He's a masterful storyteller, and II feels like he's more focused on that than something to tap your toe to and sing along with. The two albums complement each other really well imo

His voice is 50% Mars Volta/At the Drive-In singer, 50% Jim Ward, and 50% Craig Owens.

Very consistent album. Missing a Marian-esque banger though!

Cymbals Eat Guitars (and EC) are one of my favorite bands, and I think this honestly might be his best album of the six. Seriously amazing stuff
