i want ten dead to move me like Guns of Umpqua by the drive-by truckers, but it really doesn't get anywhere near that

it has a bit of a numbed and medicated vibe to it so think it's approaching the issues totally differently

no for sure, i just don't think it's effective unfortunately. i'm kinda left scratching my head and going "yeah, actually i want some fire here somewhere"

I like Ten Dead because I feel like many of these songs, while gorgeously produced, follow sort of a similar pace/progression and Ten Dead is a necessary deviation. I do wish it was somewhere in the middle of the tracklist though, as it feels sort of abrupt on the heels of Infinite Surprise whereas Levee would have been a much smoother transition as track 2.

Love how the vibe is a mix of One Sunday Morning and Sky Blue Sky. Haven’t felt something from a Wilco album in a while.

Think this is officially my 4th favourite Wilco - has enough of a unified feel and the consistency in quality, can't think how they could really release a better late career album

I hear a lot of sonic and melodic kinship with A Ghost Is Born here, minus that album’s noisier tendencies of course. It’s like a version of that album where Tweedy’s dealing only with properly treated depression instead of the crippling addiction and panic attacks he was managing back then.

I agree, I just bumped that album a .5 too...I still think 'Ghost' falls away a bit at the end but the first eight songs flow really well and would work as a complete album anyway (they clock in at about 43 minutes)
As I stated above for 'Ten Dead' there's a 'numbed and medicated' vibe to it and that same feel crops up repeatedly on both albums.

Yeah, I love Ghost a lot but it’s definitely the least listenable/most unwieldy Wilco album, even if you skip the drone section. It’s due a revisit for me too though.
And yeah the pianos on “Ten Dead” remind me a lot of “Hell Is Chrome.”

‘Ten Dead’ is one of those uncanny songs that reminds me of about ten other ones

yeah, took 'Ghost is Born' for a spin today and there's quite a few 'lesser tracks' at the end of that one.
Also went back to 'The Whole Love' and again, a few songs I don't rate too highly.
I actually like every song here quite a lot...but then even 'Cruel Country' was strangely consistent. That would make a top seven for me. I truly believe they've made a 'return to form' over the last few releases - as hackneyed as that concept is with this sort of long standing band.
They've got a lot of great albums now I guess.

ten dead is def the worst track on the album
reeks of senior flatulence
I actually prefer Ode to Joy but this is most certainly an improvement over Country.

Of the last three (all of which I have rated at a 4), I'd probably put Cruel Country first, then Ode to Joy, then this, but all are pretty even, each scratching a different itch.

Going to Jeff’s book tour tonight. The conversation is being run/moderated by Brendan Canty of Fugazi. Should be fun.

For me, their last three go Ode to Joy > Cousin > Cruel Country. Could never get into the latter tbh, but the other two are very good.
