in a world where Frankenstein doesn't qualify as an album (based), yes. apologies for that record have aged like milk

Most self-indulgent for sure but no way is IAETF worse than FTPOF.

Man this album is such a weird listening experience in a lot of ways - I'd say about half of it by runtime is more or less on par with classic-era Natty while most of the rest is basically just serviceable/disposable. It probably still evens out at around a 4 for me tbh, even if it doesn't really feel like that due to the inconsistency.

not sure anything is up to classic-era...'Smoke Detector' is it's own thing and doesn't sound like classic era.
I wouldn't want any of these other songs on 'High Violet' or 'Trouble', no way

Right now I have Weird Goodbyes, Space Invader, and Smoke Detector rated as 5/5s and Alphabet City and Crumble as 4.5s. Even as 5/5s I wouldn't put those 3 tunes in their top 20 but that level of quality is more or less aligned with the "batting average" of the classic albums. Smoke Detector could be on Alligator, Weird Goodbyes and Alphabet City on SWB, Space Invader on HV, Crumble on Sad Songs and I wouldn't bat too much of an eye.

I'm not too far away from that thinking with those particular songs but I don't think they'd really improve the old albums
this is definitely a case of an album being 'half a 3.5' and 'half a 2.5' equalling out to a 3...so half the album is 'very good' admittedly

The National. Sufjan. Arcade Fire. Bon Iver.
Nowadays this Safe White Indie Man Music feels like an artifact of the late 2000s. This is the stuff you'd listen to on the all-in-1 record player you bought from Urban Outfitters, while discussing the reading from your Feminist Studies class with your similarly quirky and unique undergrad classmates.
It all feels shockingly dated now.

'Safe White Indie Man Music....It all feels shockingly dated now.'
I don't think there's anything unique in the bands in this type of genre getting a bit redundant, it tends to be pretty much universal...wouldn't be surprised if clipping. and Death Grips are starting to sound ever so slightly redundant now.
It happens.

nah the grippers are eternal

"The National. Sufjan. Arcade Fire. Bon Iver."
Sufjan still releases great albums though (outside of his sabbatical music)

Yeah, I wish a lot of the fat was trimmed off of I Am Easy to Find because that can feel like a slog to get through with some great moments scattered. Still their only almost miss besides their debut (I dig both) for me. I liked Frankenstein a lot, but I totally understood the yawns lobbied at it. This is a better album almost undoubtedly, but it may provide more context for its sister album for people.

I feel like both of these 2023 records have a lot more in common with Sleep Well Beast than anything on IAETF. I was joking with my buddy that if I were to paint those three records (SWB, Frank, Laugh Track) in a 12 hour window, SWB is the 10pm-2am hours, Laugh Track is 2am-4am, and then Frankenstein is the hungover sun coming up a few hours later. Idk, it makes sense to me.

Also, I'm super glad they let themselves go THERE on Space Invader and Smoke Detector. About as mean as they've sounded on record since Sad Songs/Alligator/Cherry Tree save for a moment or two on SWB.
