Very strong generalization that i wasn’t expecting 😦

their stuff sounds so uninspired for the last 3-4 albums, like 80-90% filler bs and washed out prod, with the occasionally couple good tracks worth keeping.

Her goth-lite aesthetic and dissociated lyricism both have such obvious depressive overtones that I don't rly see the argument there (and let's not even start on the fanbase cvlt of sadcore bollocks). I also get it from the heavy blend of disaffection and pain in her vocal style, but that's a listener-received deal

Just that you generalised the whole fanbase. Is it going to apply to some people? Yeah, sure. Could say that about a lot of stereotypes. Just not sure why you’re on this hill. If anything, you don’t have an argument for why it applies to everyone. If you don’t mean it that way, why not just say that?

You're now gonna have to point out where I referenced the whole fanbase? Saying that a certain demographic is an obvious (potentially chief) target audience for her sound or pointing out one visible pattern of behaviour among her fans are quite different things and, uh, I felt no need to clarify that I wasn't referring to Every Single Person Who Enjoys Phoebe Bridgers because that implication ain't there to begin with

“ Phoebe Bridgers songwriting is just slacker indie refitted for depressives who find consolation in absolutely nothing happening ever.”
True that you don’t specify the whole fanbase, but if you can’t see how it’s easy to misinterpret this as saying her music is for the type you said, then that’s on you. If I’m wrong, i apologize. If you don’t want to see where I’m coming from, your loss, not mine.

Album is pretty good tbh, the band has somehow become this "hateable" entity in recent years

That's a mighty aggressive rating for something that's "pretty good"

"her music is for the type you said"
...well, it is - doesn't mean that type is exhaustive. i listen to a ton of stuff for which I'm plainly not the target audience as do you apparently, and I don't see the issue splitting ends there
"If you don’t want to see where I’m coming from, your loss, not mine"
this is a sputnik thread for the new national, we are losers here m/

still love this band but 90% of the songs on their most recent albums are the aural equivalent to watching paint dry

Phoebe's stuff is good -I just don't think it's worthy of shifting the genre nearly as much as it has. What should be a collection of pretty good albums has paved the way for an onslaught of underwritten copycats making me hesitant of anyone who describes themselves as indie singer-songwriter.
Her fanbase is pretty bad, too

Kinda taken aback by Smoke Detector, sticks out so much from the rest.

Really loving the jammy, more free-form feel of a lot of this, it feels like a natural progression of SWB (especially tracks like Turn off the House and Space Invader). I was always hoping they'd build off that sound and they're finally starting to do it.
