The debut and Typhoons are probably the only ones worth checking yeah

Damn, I really liked this when I heard it last week (hence the 3.5) but I also agree with your points against it. Almost makes me worried to give it another spin lol but great rev!!

This and Typhoons are both the definition of mediocrity. How Did We Get So Dark at least had a few bangers, but their debut is really the only great album of their discog.

@Joyful thanks dude, lemme know whatcha think if you come back to it!

lol epic review
somehow managed to avoid hearing a single track ever from this band aaaand
"But this is a Very Serious Real Rock Record—and winking at the camera was the only thing saving them last time"
don't think i'll change that here

Typhoons was beyond wack so my expectations for this are already low
|

That debut was really a one-time lucky fluke wasn't it?
|

100% the debut album was a fluke

and its a damn shame too--don't think I've ever gone harder on the air-drums than on "Out of the Black"

I always wondered if they took the intro from this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k45WG53JWlQ

Well damn maybe I should give their last record another shot. I remember hating it but I only listened to it once and I’m pretty sure I was drunk.
I loved the first record back in the day but haven’t listened to it in years.

Very nice review! I enjoyed Typhoons quite a bit but this is a real step down. Besides the bookends, there weren't really any tracks that I loved.

My biggest gripe with this is just how toothless and inoffensive it is. Doesn't really track with that cringe outburst at the Big Weekend and how fond of QOTSA they clearly are

Glad to see them back in top form after the last two duds

I don't get all the hate for this album, it's definitely better than Typhoons was, and there are a bunch of great tracks on here. "Shiner in the Dark" is one of the catchiest tracks they have ever done, and the live performances I'm seeing of it on YouTube sound fantastic.
I do wish that this B-side would've been included on the album:

I get the sense that this would be more along the lines of what some people here are looking for, it's got very "1st Royal Blood album" sound vibes.

"I get the sense that this would be more along the lines of what some people here are looking for, it's got very "1st Royal Blood album" sound vibes."
The moment they stopped mimicking their 1st album was the moment they screwed up.
It's not perfect, but it's the return to form I've desired from them for years.

you mfs are amazing with summaries, lol

quality over quantity ig (;
yeah so those of you who actually enjoyed this, what are the highlights? what irks u?
|

I don't think I've heard a single song by this band and from what I've read here I'm inclined to keep it that way

this is most certainly not the place to start
some great tracks on their s/t and "Typhoons" but now it's looking like that'll all we'll have. I really do hope they go back to having fun next album
