I think my two favourites here are 'Kind Ghosts' which sounds like the trademark Linkous sound (that's in itself very unique, no one sounds exactly like this sort of Sparklehorse track), it's the most pure Sparklehorse'y tune, and then 'Chaos of the Universe' because it doesn't really sound like any other Sparklehorse song (even if it might be a bit more influenced by other artists).

I don't know what a Sparklehorse song sounds like by Kind Ghosts and Evening Star Supercharger both stood out to me on first spin.

"Kind Ghosts" is prob my favorite too yeah, just a magical song. Just wish those higher pitched vocals toward the start were a bit more prominent throughout as that's one of the most beautiful things I've heard recently. In fact there are a lot of really gorgeous details here, the guitars sound absolutely wonderful throughout.
Chaos still eludes me though, fine enough song but it hasn't stuck with me really. Maybe my least favorite here tbh. :-/

‘Chaos’ is unique, hard to name another of his songs like it. I know that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s inherently great for that one reason but I do also happen to dig it a lot in its own right, though it needs playing loud.
That challenge of naming a similar Sparklehorse song I can complete for every other track here - not in a bad way, but he def had his familiar song templates
EDIT: You know listening again maybe it’s got something similar in ‘feel’ to ‘Cow’ from the debut and that tune is absolutely incredible

It is def fairly unique for him, indeed “Cow” is prob the closest I can think of another Sparklehorse song that sounds quite as country rock as that, like I said elsewhere I just wish it did a bit more with that influence. I’m not expecting a 7 minute Crazy Horse name or anything, but the song just leaves me a bit cold. The vocal melody is one of the weaker ones too. Again, not bad, just kind of feels like it’s missing something.

Kind of tentatively disappointed with this. It's good, and Kind Ghosts and Evening Star Supercharger are borderline 5/5 tracks (Chaos of the Universe isn't far behind either), but 75% of the album feels like they purposely swerve out of the way of success by making really unengaging melodies and ramping up their noisier aspects when they seem, at least to me as a newcomer (!), to have such a clear inclination towards early-00s fuzzy melodic indie rock. I guess what I'm saying is this is interesting without a doubt, but I wish it was as consistently memorable as a few of the standouts here.

Sowing - if you prefer the 'pretty stuff' then definitely head to 'It's a Wonderful Life'
Sparklehorse are one of those 'brainchild of one man' acts and it takes a while to 'get' Linkous I guess - the choices he makes eventually make sense as you get a hold of his logic and 'fantasy world/world building'

That's certainly fair, and I'm definitely new to the artist. I'll be sure to check It's A Wonderful Life, because I love the more melodic side to this.

I have high hopes - a 4+ at least I'd predict, no pressure ;)

Sparklehorse should be sowingcore.

I dig some of the subtle references to past 'Horse songs here - I catch a "Cruel Sun" reference in "Hello Lord" and a "Homecoming Queen" one in "I Fucked It Up." Any others?
