damn this is really great wasn't expecting it to be
"like an archetypical Sparklehorse record descending miraculously to us from on high"

'@Doof, it depends, while his softer stuff tends to be my preference, I do rank some his louder/noisier tunes like Pig and Hammering the Cramps very highly. Just don't think those types of songs here are particular highlights.'
Hmm, think I prefer 'Higsons' to 'Hammering the Cramps' tbh
I'm a sucker for the noisier stuff - 'Happy Man' and particularly the incredible 'Cruel Sun' are top 5 on 'Goodmorning Spider' ('Pig' is solid too), 'King of Nails' is top 3 on 'Wonderful Life', and 'Ghost in the Sky' would be top 5 on 'Dreamt'

used to show the Pig video to my kids to scare them when they were young

I'll give it another two years before showing that one to my daughter as she's two and a half ;)

she repeats everything right now yeah
Also: how has Sowing not listened to a full Sparklehorse album when I'm 99% sure he's listened to at least two full Grandaddy albums
That's like exploring The Monkees before The Beatles

Oh yeah, Ghost In The Sky rules hard, Doof. Been kinda obsessed with that album recently, had always mostly ignored it in favor of the other three previously but it's got plenty of gems.

Sunnyv - it does have some gems, maybe even a couple of songs better than any here…but I’m really amazed that imo this album is definitely more satisfying overall than that one

I prefer the fragile introverted songs like O Child but the noisy songs contrast them well.

I did this too. My school had a fundraiser or something and somehow I ended up with The Monkees' greatest hits as a prize before I ever checked The Beatles. Still get mad kindergarten vibes any time I listen to Pleasant Valley Sunday.
God, I'm a monster what even am I?? ;-)

Ha, Sowing that’s perfect
I think given enough of your time Sparklehorse will prove to have a Sowing 5 in their discog…

Yeah Doof, I agree that this is probably a bit superior to
Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain, pretty remarkable.

As of now I'd put this pretty comfortably on about the same level as Vivadixie and Spider, solidly above Dreamt and a little below Wonderful Life.

I’d still put it below the top three, for now each of those has a slightly more distinct overall atmosphere.
‘Viva’ had a carefree naïveté to it, ‘Spider’ a schizo tenderness/abrasiveness, ‘Wonderful’ a dreamy pastoral ‘world of its own’ vibe
‘Dreamt’ felt a bit of a patchwork - this to me just feels like a more consistent version of that…but a unique atmosphere could yet grow. Will prob take five years for me to work out if it does tbh

I am tempted to 5 all the first three though

Agree the other albums do have somewhat distinct atmospheres. Like I kind of said on the previous page, this one feels a bit like an AI-generated Sparklehorse album at times, it checks off all the expected Linkous boxes.

i'd put this below them all but it is still LOVELY

Man idk, the best tunes here stand against any other ‘Horse material imo.
