Nah, shi. I'm feeling a 4 atm. They're definitely improved in the instrumental department but the vocals are holding this back a bit for me? Gonna have to listen again, though.

Sounds a lot different to what I remembered them being like

It's a pretty hard pivot for sure. You can hear traces of the old touches of the last LP in the guitars but they're really going for something different now. Can't say these guys don't have fresh ideas. I thought they had a fresh take on the Slint thing with the last one, but this one is a whole new animal. Gnarlier and more emotional.

i don't see a universe in which the vocals hold this back while albums like Schlagenheim and YWGWWWW get a pass

Listening to the opener with Sona and: is it just me or are bands that sound like this a dime a dozen nowadays?

bands nowadays that sound like this yes
bands nowadays that have raised this sound to these stakes and intensity lol no. 5 solid years of this style have limped so that this can finally swagger and shit itself for our benefit

there've been a few bands lately that have used a sort of unwound-swans kinda noisy approach. idk how extensive the list rly is but def a few
I do appreciate that they’ve made this pivot away from their more slowcore-ish stuff. I liked that too, but the change is still appreciated

Lol waiting for ars to come back after the opener because kinda the beauty of it is how unassuming/conventional it is
|
| |
Oh, I didn't check the other tracks, but if the opener is the most conventional song on here: cool

"i don't see a universe in which the vocals hold this back while albums like Schlagenheim and YWGWWWW get a pass"
On YWGWYW, the vocals have a much more brooding, gothic, sinister thing going on. Utterly different to my ear. Fair enough comparison with Schlagenheim, they can get a bit wacky there too. But there's really even, chill talk-singing delivery in there too. I just feel like the sort of warblely, caterwauling thing he starts doing when he gets emotional doesn't always suit the vibe of the songs, FOR ME. This is based off about 1 1/2 listens though. Open to it growing on me. Definitely gonna come back. They did something kinda special with this.

He actually mentions hating his vocals on several songs on the track by track analysis for this but that it was the best he could do. Respect the honesty

I’m not totally sure how I feel about the “lifting the veil” kinda approach in a self-track-by-track analysis he did. cool to see the perspective maybe but idk, I worry that it spoils the plot too much
