Hypnotize and Mesmerize probably have the best SOAD songwriting on them. The problem is that everything before these was heavier, quirkier and featured the far better Serj lead/Daron backing vocals. I actually like Daron’s singing but Serj is outstanding and really under-utilised here.

That's definitely it.

Like the layers on Hypnotize and Mesmerize it outstanding and is the reason why Question and Dreaming are among SOAD's classics but there is a bit of eccentricity lacking.

Also while Darin compliments Serj's sweet melodies with his odd voices cracks and shrieks he definitely doesn't have the actual vocal abilities of Serj.
