question: do the meds need to change the artist name, or should this fall under a new artist page?
|
| |
This was briefly touched upon. I think the “Anohni and the Johnsons” thing makes sense: her new band name being combination of the other two is kinda clean

well, RYM changed the name but then they have the 'old/alternative name' there too alongside the older albums
here I don't know, guess it gets a new artist page

"surprise of the year so far I'd say"
what a pleasant surprise though. i'm sure hopelessness had an audience and in some ways it was good, but selfishly i wanted another soulful record

Doof tbh your review could use more detail, both on the themes of the album and the musical composition

I was only familiar with their solo debut, this is much different (for the better!) and am liking this a good fair bit!

'Doof tbh your review could use more detail, both on the themes of the album and the musical composition'
I put up mini reviews on my AOTY account and don't post them here but just got a feeling this might not get a review so broke my own rule ;)
Usually I wait an extra day or two and another 2 or 3 listens before reviewing and honestly I should have probably done that here but also in terms of the main points I still feel the same.
The album flows incredibly well, maybe best of the year so far in that regard, but some of these songs I'd enjoy a lot less without the 'whole album experience'.
An extra day or two of listening and this review would have been five paras long I guess, sometimes I get lazy. One of those paras would have been me going on about how great 'Why Am I Alive Now?' is rather than in the thread.

Also: 'Sliver of Ice' is such a beauty it really is.
EDIT: this is on the front page, now I feel a bit bad about the length of this review...!

Got it got it, yeah saw it on the front page as well, that's why I mentioned it
The album does flow super well, I think "Can't" is my favorite

Yeah, I guess I'd actually take a whole album of pure soul songs like 'Can't', works so well here
This album has an overall soul influence even if with half the tracks it's more just a hint that spills over from their neighbours

Listening for the first time now, on "Sliver of Ice" and I'm hearing quite a bit of Jeff Buckley in her vox, lovely stuff so far

Album Rating: 4.5
Ranked/Rated:
1. Why Am I Alive Now [5/5] (like an ideal mix of 'Stay' by Bowie and 'My Oblivion' by Tindersticks, lyrics incredible too, guaranteed top ten song of 2023)
2. Sliver of Ice [5/5] (spellbinding shit right here)
3. Scapegoat [4.5/5] (the vocals!)
4. Rest [4.5/5]
5. There Wasn't Enough [4/5]
6. Can't [4/5]
7. It Must Change [4/5]
8. You Be Free [4/5]
9. It's My Fault [3.5/5]
10. Go Ahead [3.5/5]
Despite being bottom I really dig 'Go Ahead' and think it's one of the key components to the flow of the album etc

HOPELESSNESS is one of the great albums of last decade and I simply must rise from the dead to say so. This album is a balm; on repeat.

I haven't heard Hopelessness but I'm very curious to know how much of the reaction to that was due to the fact that it came out back when the dominant political discourse on the internet was still gamergate/anti-sjw adjacent kneejerkery
