I'm not really feeling the love for Animals unfortunately, seems like a pretty standard song with some cringe lyrics. the ending is also hilarious, can't believe they didn't come up with anything better than that hard cut lol
if they were going to commit to this release format I think they should have just made one heavy EP and one soft one. just swap Banshee for Two Graves and you're pretty much there lmao, improves the whole thing so much

^I can see that also. You would also have to swap "Nothing More" for "Circles". I wish these ep's were a full length tho.

I didn't think the verse lyrics were too bad. The chorus is a little cheesy I suppose. But I think it's far and away the best song on this EP.

Idk the closer is growing like crazy. Some cool soundscapes here. End of Banshee too

In typical Anberlin fashion: no bad songs, all good songs, some grow to become excellent.

Banshee honestly might be my favourite here, it's like a sneaky Stranger Ways sequel. put both EPs in a playlist though and it's a lot more satisfying than either one by itself. idk why they didn't just fix some of the jank transitions and make this an album

Also, both Anberlin and Yellowcard cited EPs as "the new way of doing things" or "what everyone is doing now" or something like that maybe not verbatim. Is that a real thing? Because I feel like EPs are no more or less prevalent than they used to be.

I think they probably mean more frequent releases more than specifically releasing EPs but who knows for sure

LPs >>> EPs >>>>> One-off Singles
Package it all together so I have something substantial to put on and listen to.

I don't know about EPs being any more prevalent than previously, but I've always associated EPs with being a more cohesive, tight package of songs that bands make and, depending on the length of the in-studio recordings, typically represent the best stuff the band is currently making.
So many LPs wear out their welcome these days, that I much prefer a briefer listen if it means that the smaller batch of songs represents the band firing on all cylinders.
It makes sense that Anberlin and YC would gravitate towards releasing EPs. Reunions can be spotty, rehearsals harder to organize, so it may be to the band's benefit to focus on 4 or 5 songs rather than try to pump out a 10-12 song LP in the name of nostalgia.

This was very in one ear and out the other for me. Every song was “good” but I have no real desire to listen to any of them again. Outro to Banshee was awesome and Animals was cool for the industrial kind of vibes. I dug the feel of Nothing More a lot though

Sowing's playlist (both ep's combined) is the way to go if you want to listen to this. It sounds odd in isolation, to be fair.
Edit: I moved "Body Language to track #4 after "Nothing Lost", and it flows better imo, but yeah rest stays the same as the original imaginary album version of this.

Animals would be a fun opener for the LP version

1. Animals 2. Two Graves would be an intense album kick off

I could see it other than the loud abrupt ending to Animals leading into the quiet gradual beginning of Two Graves being super weird
|

Weird gripe: does anyone think the volume level in Lacerate’s verse vs chorus production is super uneven? Like I get that choruses are often pushed a few dbs in the mix, but this feels like WAY more than usual. I literally find myself bumping up the volume a click when that chorus crashes in, then back down for the verse and so on. Pretty annoying…but maybe it’s just my ears.
Otherwise, I love the song and am really enjoying this comeback as a whole. Of course, I’m also the guy that thinks DITWLIAP is better than Cities when I listen to them nowadays, so take that for what it’s worth

I agree but I feel like it's like that across a lot of the EP
I should care but I just embrace the ear damage and smile while Anberlin reminds me of my youth haha

The "Two Graves"/"Lacerate" combo works just fine imo. Try this playlist:
1. Two Graves
2. Lacerate
3. Nothing Lost
4. Body Language
5. Banshee
6. Animals
7. Decoder
8. Asking
9. Circles
10. Nothing More
It's almost the same as Sowing's just with "Body Language" moved upwards in the tracklist.
I swear this would be my second favorite or even my favorite anberlin album if released together.
