yeah man I guess this just isn’t really my jam. Don’t get me wrong, this lady can fuckin sing (wail? shriek? yes also those), but as far as this kind of style, Lingua Ignota is almost too inaccessible for me and this is just another level of weird lol. I enjoyed this but it’s not something I’d return to.

I don’t even feel like I should rate it because it’s so far out of my wheelhouse.

yeah it's more performance art. I think seeing this live would be a better experience than listening to it like a regular album

'The cathedral acoustics brother oh they’ll melt your face' (2)

I adored hearing the reverberations of her voice echoing around the cathedral, it really adds something to the immersion. I found this instantly captivating, even more so than her acclaimed studio material (which I do mostly enjoy). It's tense, almost frightening, but honestly that adds to the experience. I guess this is why people watch horror films?

P.S. I need to revisit Lingua Ignota, because I wasn't ready the first time

I think it’s kinda impossible to fairly apprise this as a “do I enjoy these sounds” kinda album cause ye it’s so tightly linked to the message and context behind it, and the location (and manner) in which it was performed. With all of those things at forefront of mind when listening, I just found this captivating and moving. Remove that context and ye I mean it’s incredibly inaccessible and difficult to listen to and not all that enjoyable in the usual sense of the word, but to seek to engage with it without that context feels silly, like visiting a memorial or museum and assessing what you see from a purely aesthetic perspective - just doesn’t make sense to do that.

That’s not to say that if you don’t enjoy or appreciate this then you’re wrong - you may feel that the aesthetic weirdness is too much of a hinderance/barrier to engaging with the messaging/context, and I could see that - but ye I love this it’s just so unique and obtuse and powerful of a thing.

Yep, it’s impossible to detach this from the subject matter, or indeed the moment, really. I imagine it would be a striking yet rather confusing / odd listen without any context. That’s a huge reason why the acoustics matter for instance. Yes, I do ‘like’ the way they sound, but the context is why it ends up being so impactful beyond a more instinctive ‘this sounds good’
