Haha I'm aware that both are music ;-)

Just in terms of my own selfish need to categorize, I prefer LPs.

But between outstanding EPs from Manchester Orchestra, Adjy, Yellowcard, and perhaps Anberlin in a week, I think 2023 is turning me into an EP connoisseur.

Honestly I thought Idyll Opus was a tad overrated

This is the first release of theirs I've been head over heels for. I'm a sucker for emotive summer indie though, so this is basically tailor made for listeners like me.

No jab perceived, I just take every opportunity to reassert my elder status here because mid-30s in Sputnik years is like mid-70s.

unfortunately i do not think the draw here can be entirely blamed on zoomers

if in doubt, blame midwest america. the collective ennui there could fuel an entire nation's worth of precious ambient scholarship, but nope nope nope the whole enterprise somehow got derailed by insipid sentimentalist bullshit that properly fucked the rest of the internet's algorithms forever

I don't think it's bad. I enjoyed it. I just think they had like 3-4 really good musical ideas but the album was too long and those ideas ended up being spread too thin and recycled. I just remember listening to it and wanting to skip to the best parts. On this EP, I really enjoy every minute of it because it's just 5 tracks and they're all really upbeat and warm.

"No jab perceived, I just take every opportunity to reassert my elder status here because mid-30s in Sputnik years is like mid-70s."

We out here.

There's just something very appealing about Adjy/Idyll Opus to me. First couple listens I definitely found it a bit overlong, bloated, not as good on the whole as its best parts, but on subsequent listens it really grows and I came to appreciate the strongest moments a lot more in context of everything.

I'm not super into the midwest emo/lite punk shit and I'm pretty specific/picky about what hillbilly podunk down home strangs music I'll listen to but something about their blend really appeals to me, just the overall blend of sounds they've achieved lands for me in a big way.
The lyrics can be pretty bad/cheese as fuck at times but it's easy for me to ignore with everything else going on. I also like sangin and they're just nice songs that feel good to sang.

I'd take a full album of these CC vocal melodies then, please and thanks. Memorable without being overly saccharine, atmosphere driven by the strength of the percussion rather than a focus on artificially cultivating one in the studio, gorgeous guitars, succinct songwriting that isn't overdone, emotional lyrics...perfect for summer.

lyricall Idyll Opus is also miles ahead of 99.9999% of music. The quality on just the freaking lyrics is fantastic. corn jokes aside
