I think how I would define mature in this case is songwriting that is far more composed and intentional. If you want to call this "slow band music" you can, but you're hearing this record far differently than I am. I think the addition of more organic instrumentation gives Trevor's sound so much more space, which in turn allows him to use electronic elements in more targeted and effective ways.

I didn't mention the production on this record, which is one of its true high points. There's something that's both blooming and withering about the production simultaneously, mirroring that same theme of bleak dichotomy that permeates this whole record. Again, everything here is pointed toward one complete cohesive artistic statement. I've never found that in one of Trevor's projects before.

Wow I think the first 3 tracks are stellar. Surprised to hear people say the first half lacks

I have to agree with most here. The first 3 tracks here are the weakest, prizefighter being the best of those 3

I just feel like the album kicks off at the Sling, but really kicks off at Deep Red Sea (I kinda like the instrumental, yeah hate me for that)

Personal favorite from this is Mercury atm. That could change though

Thanks for the 'The Vast of Night' rec! I had never heard of that movie before.

"First of all, this album is nothing if not atmospheric. Secondly, it captures a similarly isolated sensibility from the American West..."

Might have to czech this at some point

I just think they are a lot worse than the rest of the album for me personnally. I can understand why those can appeal to you, but they dont appeal to me.

Just listened to this while on public transport.Maybe my rating is "harsh". I enjoy it . I wish we could do like 3.7 or things like that

Strange and not what I expected but 'Mercury' really reminds me of Sparklehorse
