kinda resent the idea that the neo-soul around was "plaguing the airwaves" when janelle popped onto the scene tbh! i know she captured a couple bolts of lightning in a bottle but there was tons of amazing r&b and neo-soul being released in 2007 when she dropped metropolis..

heavy hitters/unique and pivotal r&b albums all released before anyone really knew janelle monae’s name:
Gnarls Barkley released St. Elsewhere in 2006
Justin Timberlake released Future Sex/Love Sounds in 2006
Nelly Furtado’s “Loose” was released in 2006
Kanye West’s MBDTF, Sade’s Soldier of Love, and Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah pt 2 were all released the same year as ArchAndroid
