@Koris I agree with all of that. for me tho, every pantera album (minus CFH) feels halfbaked and unfocused, with good riffs, or even excellent riffs, that just go nowhere most of the time. phil's cringey tough guy puffed-up chest "you aint got the balls, son" is trying to be badass but just comes off as stupid and hilarious. There are good moments in nearly every Pantera song but a better band would've utilized them alot better (ahem, Down). CFH is the only Pantera album I'd call truly excellent, the rest is fine to shit.

not to mention the blatant racism from the band, phil's numerous white pride speeches, the confederate flag "rebel and proud" bullshit. Growing up in Texas myself, these guys always gave us a bad name and fed into the stereotypes of the south. I've always had to explain to people that no, we aren't racist uneducated rednecks, nor do we condone that shit, whenever i'd go to the east or west coast, and Pantera are a part of that problem. People would probably say to separate the personal lives of the members from the music, but I do hear their bigotry in the lyricism, the attitude, the image etc. Hard for me to split the two apart.

"I think what annoys me most is that some people are like "oh they saved metal from the trenches of grunge" meanwhile what killed grunge for the most part (some people still kept it going) was actually the death of Kurt Cobain."

But if that narrative doesn't hold up to scrutiny today, then why fret about it? The retrospective opinion of grunge is far different than how metalheads perceived it back in the 90s, with even many (though not all) elitist metalheads generally accepting it as a good movement nowadays. And at the end of the day, whether you like Pantera or not: without them, a lot of bands both you and I love would not be around today. So their influence can be considered positive AND negative

I guess you've got a point, tbh it's also related to how that "meatheaded metal attitude" led to the huge wave of "anti-emo" sentiment and that stuff always bothered me. not to say the emo movement was perfect, but all the "go hurt yourself" and homophobic slurs...

“Plus it was mostly the attitude of Pantera's fans with all the homophobic bullshit, it's no doubt that that attitude led to all the emo kids in the 2000s getting bullied as much as they did.”

The kind of person who’d be both a Pantera fan and a dickhead would still have been a dickhead without Pantera. It seems obvious, and it is, but the emo kids in the 2000s would probably have still been bullied regardless, unfortunately. It’s all just to say that, while we could point the fingers at Pantera, Pantera were a byproduct of many of the same factors that they would continue to inform and influence. Remove them, and those kids would probably be getting shoved into a locker while Suicidal Tendencies blared from a walkman or something, instead.

Pantera have influenced, definitely, but they’re far from the only thing. And with the emo, bullying, identity politics we’d have to go into so many things.

Yeah probably. Pantera's an easy target for sure. I think what disgusts me most outside of all that is all the imagery that Sonoma pointed out. I think if you take Phil out this is probably a 2.5 tier groove album. Still below some of the best stuff from like Machine Head (which, Robb isn't perfect, but he seems like a nicer guy to hang around).

Also if there's no Pantera there's at least no Five Finger Death Punch so that's at least one positive even if we lose other bands.
