Hammy is a fine critique from where I’m sitting

I like the taste regardless… shit just sounds cool and I certainly don’t need convincing of their kvlt credentials. Realistically there’s no oblivion on the horizon (at least mid-listen!), and if there was (or I was actually convinced of that fact), then would it really matter what I was listening to? Nothing would sound good, I can assure you

Erm yes, so it hams but also jams and also who really cares?

'I don't know what to think of these guys. Sacred White Noise was an anomoly bm album and this is just a whole other level.'

Don't sleep on the EP, it might be their best work to date.

Guess I could specify I'm talking about Void Masquerading as Matter. Never heard the debut EP, tbh.

If I want to be legitimately scared, then I’ll just jam Diamanda Galas instead of stuff like this or DSO

Not understanding that critique either. I don’t even find them particularly ‘dark’ (and I don’t think they really try to be); it’s much more on the intense psych/prog side for me, mixed with an obvious appreciation for black metal, ambient and noise, all brought together by some seriously impressive musicianship. It’s about the furthest you can get from your typical forest dwelling BM. I remember YouTube suggesting their guitarist to me at one point (he did a lesson series years ago) but I had no idea who he was back then.

I don't think it's him it was another dude breaking down a few tracks, he did a few DSO ones as well I think. Not a play through like an insane break down. Well over my head. No one knows who these are (apart from Typer from yautja/thou( been playing live with them

I mean, I think this has cool creepy vibes. Diamanda Galas is terrifying in her own way, though. I just don't see how this could be hammy or corny in any way though. It just sounds like good, dark, decently innovative metal to me.

Idk if they’re actually trying to sound evil or not, just saying I can see the perception that they might be and how it may not translate

Either way it doesn’t matter much to me because the music is enjoyable regardless

hmmmm PROS

・prod

・occasional off-kilter goodness (2mins into Burning Kingdom of Now + majority of Hungry Ghosts oh yes. heard a neat Liturgy-esque self-sabotaging blastbeat at one point to)

・the straightforward bm sections mostly rip, as do the frequent changes of pace

・Sub Lilith Tunnels is v neat insertion, maybe could have used slightly earlier placement but the atmospheres on this one are some of the record's most convincing

CONS

・too much of the would-be-unsettling melodic stuff relies on procedural key modulation and way overstays its welcome. second halves of Surgical Utopian Love and Solar Witch are kinda a chore for this reason. band repeat this trick so many times throughout the record and it loses its grip as such

・underwhelming closer (which makes for dodgy sequencing and wastes the lacuna opened up by Sub Lilith Tunnels)

the key mod thing is a dealbreaker imo, gonna drop my rating on this (though I defs don't see it going any lower)
