Another real nice effort from them. I think after just a few spins I prefer this over I Am Easy to Find. Just still find that record to be a bit aimless. Some moments really jump out at me early here over others, but enjoying the whole thing so far

Super muted, super understated. Not BAD though. I liked a few moments here. Would be great if they were more willing to put actual drum beats in the songs.

I agree and really wish they wouldn't shy away from anything resembling a pulse. This has some good moments but even they pale in comparison to the worst songs from their classic albums.

Also, you'll be missed Rowan. This is a fantastic swan song of a review.

Funny how White Lies and Editors both just relaased better and more exciting albums than Interpol and The National.
Neither band have ever been critical darlings but their new music has energy to it with electronic elements while these guys just sound bored and like they are on auto pilot.

Love u Row - your friendship and your writing, which has inspired me over the years and will no doubt continue to.

...I am happy to take the 'this album is great actually!' mantle if you'll let me

Featuring those pop stars makes me want to not listen to this. Kind of a cringe tactic to lure in an audience and makes it look like they feel the album can’t stand on its own merit. Plenty of unknowns out there that can sing better than all of those folks combined. They’re just names to put on the titles.

Ok this album isn’t bad so far, ngl. 4.5 songs in. Still time for it to take a dark turn.

Interesting comparison with R.E.M. - New Adventures in Hi-Fi, but I get it. Unfortunately, this does not have the drive that album had.

Yep. For me, that was one of R.E.M.'s album that I returned to most.

I tried to rearrange the tracklist so the album wouldn't run out of steam, but it happens no matter what. I like the idea of this thing opening with Tropic Morning News and Grease in Your Hair, but that leaves very little energy to spread across the remaining 9 tracks. :-(
