For real tho I started that band with Spiritual Migration and Aathma and those are two of the most stunning guitars albums I've ever heard in my life and it took me forever to go backwards in their discography because I was afraid those albums just wouldn't be able to measure up, but when I did go back I was really impressed with Core and Shin-Ken, both of those albums rip for sure.
There's just something very extra special about SM/Aathma for me, and you can take that with the grain of salt that I mainly got into metal through dumb prog shit and while I've started to move away from that shit into other genres a lot more, especially with prog largely stagnating and being boring shittier copies of things that have been done 100x, but I definitely still lean into the spicier rhythms and soaring harmonized clean sections provided in their later shit, and I think SM and Aathma especially stand miles above most modern prog.

Core is fucking insane??? Its just an incredible record prog death record. That being said it is easy to think that Core was written by an entirely different band. Its so different to everything else they have done in a way

spiritual migration fucking sucks and is downright the only album by them I don't like
assma is mid but they've been on the right path since - their last one is a banger and a half

Spiritual migration never did anything for me. Liked their last one. For me though the shadow of Core hangs over the band, probably wasnt the best idea to start there but hey its incredible. Im looking forward to whatever they do next. Rivers of Nihil was always eh for me I like Owls but its not outstanding or mind blowing. The work fucking sucked, bands could easily just fall apart or go into a chugfest.

You can hear Core in every album they've made since, they've certainly progressed to encompass different sounds and embody a new identity, but the same band is behind it. That guitar tone is eternal.
Metanoia is indeed an amazing album and Sput slept on it hard, still made that top 50 year list though!

Update new Rivers of Nihil track, its pretty bland and a bit shit. Only adding it here for the proggy bois

Metanoia is mid as hell and a step back from the previous two albums in every way.
SM also better than Aathma but I go back and forth and they're insanely sonically similar to to say one is okay and one is dogshit is pretty wild.

The horse having a panic attack from 5:10 to 5:32 of Equus sums this band up well - just a bit silly. Like they've got the English Defence League St. Georges Cross on the cover with a horses mane but I wasn't aware they were super in to horses OR bigots (unless you count their old bass player lol). For real though, they always try way too hard.

They’ve always been a tryhard band, that’s for sure. Sometimes their music is just too much, but i’ve started to appreciate this style nowadays.
