"i like that they've dialed back the borderline abrasive techiness of Greyview."
That techiness is what I loved the most about this band. Once you streamline the technicality they just blend in with every other band with this style imo. I need more cool shit like that big riff in the middle of Cloud Cascade. More cool songs like Vacant and Soul Sleep please.
Less of whatever the fuck Immolation is

Immolation def one of the worst ones here yeah

Idk the dialing back of the techy stuff works because often compositions that are too techy can get in their own way and just sound like wank. There's a limit to that for me. Greyview was great but this was another level for me.

These guys were at their best with the wank cause they did it better than anyone else

Reverie into Immolation is definitely the weak spot on here. Everything else slaps imo
False Meridian and Purity Weeps especially. Talk about heaters

I guess they were but this is exactly the right spot for me. I love the atmosphere and the post-metal influence, and the vox are incredibly dynamic.

I gotta agree with outliers, sun sleep ep is the best of the marcus era.
False Meridian and Purity Weeps are by far the best tracks, and half this album just really blends together. Also some of the choruses can get pretty grating and ruins the flow of the song tbh

Opener is booty
"Shades Astray" has the big boi breakdown but they should've developed it more, second half is lame
"Labyrinthine" solid
"Without a Whisper" good Thornhill-core
"False Meridian" overrated, opens with a beefy groove and that's all it has going for it for the most part. Get rid of the cleans.
"Reverie" the most nothing-burger of a track [2] Album isn't as atmospheric as it thinks it is to deserve this track
"Immolation of Night" solid but also gets randomly messy before C H U G S
"Purity Weeps" hate it when these bands toss in a predictable breakdown that serves no fucking purpose to the goddamn song, kills the second half for me instantly. If you have a good thing going, sometimes letting it ride is better than LOOK GUYS WE'RE HEAVY. If you wanna be atmo-djent, let the damn atmosphere breathe, don't just go *twinkle twinkle* in the background buried behind low-end abuse and vox and act like that's enough/rant
"Void Surfacing" dj0nt dj0nt sdjiofdbdgn + *twinkle twinkle* guys it's A T M O i swear
"Emberglow" dj0nt but what if we ended it abruptly
"Elysium" sometimes I wonder if IA fans never had a progcore or djent phase
Prod on vox + guy's inability or refusal to enunciate probably makes the lyrics harder to pick out than they need to be.
Overall this doesn't make me want to bang me head into a wall like Greyview so hat's off to them, they still have a nice dreamy sound but don't push it far enough, lose the djent I'm bored, 2.5 GOODNIGHT CLEVELAND remember to drink water.

Opener is kinda when I realized this would be something special for me. I get maybe dialing back on the breakdowns but they fit pretty nicely and the flow is immaculate. It's weird when people say the clean hooks get in the way of the flow but I love the tonal shifts and the dynamic changes.
Vocals remind me of ERRA too tbh.

the cleans have been my least fav part of this easily so far and i really hope they grow on me bc the rest demolishes

They fit TOO nicely, you can see them coming a mile away and they're not doing anything special, just mosh fodder--which can be entertaining, but when you're trying to be this epic atmospheric experience, it doesn't click. Just very much your standard fare for the genre, and in the case of a handful of songs (i.e. "Purity Weeps) it ruins the momentum and/or tramples over something interesting.
They have something special here if they let their softer textures dominate more frequently, which would also make songs like "Reverie" feel less like wasted space.

I guess but it's not enough to ruin my experience tbh. I can only hope they expound more on the melodic textures in the future.

Ben really was a talented dude. Not only were his vocals prime, but his lyrics were truly some of the best. I miss him a lot

Yeah the more I listen to Stillworld the more I realize he was the true IA vocalist.
Marcus is good don't get me wrong but I can definitely understand why people aren't feeling his vox on this album. (or Greyview for that matter) think he found his perfect balance on the Sun Sleeps EP.
