Mile Zero intro riff is good too but I remember hearing Misha talk about that song and he says they both came up with it

Oh nice, I didn't know that. It just sounds like the most Mark riff ever so I assumed he came up with it.

@Colton he's cool and really talented but the guy just isn't funny in the slightest

Not attempting to disagree but on the youtube release for Mile Zero it cites Mark as saying this:

"I had written a couple really simple, fluffy riff ideas - the first 2 riffs in the song - they had sort of a Devin Townsend vibe to them and we tried to see if we could make them work with any of our pre-existing song ideas."

Whereas Misha wrote most of the middle sections as a demo before they workshopped it as a whole together once Mark joined the band. I wish I had a better sense for who writes what - I just know that Jake is written all over anything super ambient usually.

back in the PII days I remember coming here and reading people's takes and someone said that Spencer just leaves a giant shit stain on some moments in their songs and as much as I love the guy and I'm offended, I can't help but agree lmao

Silhouette is okay. Might even end up loving it. I can tell Jake's been digging The Midnight, if it is Jake that made that one.

I can 100% see why Spencer's vocal style isn't for everyone, but the progressive improvement from PI to PV is one of the most notable trajectories of improvement I've seen. Even if not everyone digs his tone, he is ridiculously skilled and clearly put a shit ton of work into getting better. I remember some old doc where he mentioned not wanting to use tuning on PII moving forward and it has paid off in the long-run for sure

I'm certain he still uses auto tune to some degree in these studio releases. I mainly mean his choice of words or his choice of execution for some parts sometimes make me cringe. The "mistakes running through my brain" (1:11) part in Wildfire pisses me off. Sometimes the dude needs to take a backseat and let the rest of the band "speak."

Like nothing could have been said at that part and it would've been better imo. Just an example.

Yeah that's understandable. I watched the making of PV today and it was interesting to see their approach to writing. Like they all sort of write the vocal parts together as a collective, and I do wonder if it means in the end they don't end up with as much "space" as some of the proggier sections might deserve - it's an intriguing writing process for sure

I won't watch that until I get a better sense of the album, but yeah, let the progs prog.

how i always picked out who wrote what riffs post-p1

misha: basically all the meshuggah style riffs. anything involving tapping. generally everything they play on 7 or 8 string guitars.

mark: everything involving with slides, open strings, string skipping, tremelo picking, giant chords usually 6 strings.

jake: all the clean guitars and ambient leads. also all the stuff driven by octave chords like garden in the bones and remain indoors

think generally if you're really trying to find out you can look up live performances and see who plays what parts

I think overall with this release, they reeeeally leaned into the reception that Reptile got and they decided it was good template to take their songwriting as a whole.

That's a good thing you mentioned @AlexKzillion, since the first thing I thought of when listening to 'Dying Star' at 2:42, I thought "Mark wrote that, didn't he?"
