idk i think they did that on this - "the stuff" that is - y'all might argue it's messy and maybe you wouldn't be wrong but have you ever really heard anything like this? it's certainly not perfect and it is ambitious but it feels much more substantive than you're making it out to be i think

personally dont understand why collabs need to give us, like, the genre-fusion we're wanting from the two bands, it feels like such a metalhead thing to expect doesnt it? why cant this collab do exactly what they did and not be wrong about the EP they put together, to they point that they should "do better?" the call to action in the review seems harsh to me

I mean, if you want to collab with another artist but don’t want to bring elements of both bands to the table in the songs, then just make a split, not a collab. Sure, there is space enough in the world of music for collabs like this that are less ambitious in scope, but that doesn’t preclude criticism for that lack of ambition. They don’t NEED to give us a perfect blend of the genres of both bands, but when you promote a collab project that’s EXACTLY the expectation you’re giving fans imo. Criticism for either of those points is, from my perspective, fair game.

“have you ever really heard anything like this?”

Yeah i guess i just disagree and I’m not sure why this attitude/expectation is taken for granted

“Lack of ambition”

Not every experimental collab needs to result in cutting edge future music, but that said, i don’t understand how you’re measuring ‘ambition’ here. Do you think the bands did not a.) work hard, or b.) have a strong desire to do something? That’s a whole heckuva lot different from not appreciating the particular stylistic combination of the bands involved, yet you seem to conflate the two?

Ambition isn’t the same as effort. I suppose “achieve the full potential of what a collaboration between Full of Hell and Primitive Man could be” is what I’m getting at with the word “ambition”. I’m not saying they didn’t put effort in or that this is an inauthentic release, I’m saying it didn’t live up to the expectations of what these two bands could (in theory, in my opinion) achieve together, and that it doesn’t feel like the guys sought that out here, so were under-ambitious. As per the final para of the rev, I praise FoH as usually being very good at this very thing, hence why this felt underwhelming by comparison.

It goes back to the first point, though - I think not going for a cool blend between their sounds and instead mostly releasing a Primitive Man album with a few FoH flourishes was under-ambitious and uninteresting, but if you like it (and don’t think that such a aspiration is an interesting one) then I’m not going to disagree and all the more power to you.

As I said, I’m not saying that it was necessary for them to have shot for that goal - it’s their art, they can do what they want - I’m just saying I wish that they had (and that, if they did actually shoot for that goal, which is the goal I think most collabs shoot for, then they did not imo succeed).

that all makes sense to me and i appreciate you going into such detail, i guess i find it a little ironic to fault an experimental collab for "not living up to expectations" haha. but i do understand your disappointment

i think the wall you and i are running into here is ‘ambition’ and its intended meaning. as a writer, i sort of admire you embellishing this word/idea to make your point, but as a fan, i think it's unfair and hurts your argument or perhaps turns your argument into something you don't intend it to be

I wouldn’t say referring to “a lack of ambition” as “not seeking to fulfil your potential” is a particularly stretched interpretation. I think our disagreement is more re what does and doesn’t make a good collab and therefore what those who are collaborating should aspire to and therefore what could constitute a lack of ambition in that context. In any event, it’s a turn of phrase I’ve used in these here chats, rather than the rev, so no harm I suppose.

Appreciate the discourse despite the fact that we appear to disagree on literally everything m/.

true that you haven't used the word in the rev but i think you've leveraged the same idea in the rev so apologies if it seems like i'm splitting hairs here. maybe i am lol

i think you've summarized it pretty well above; appreciate the discourse as well

Its fking great man, just listened again theres that like 6 mins of Noise which im not super keen on, I like Noise but that sections doesnt really do much for me apart from that the whole thing goes, those mad glitchy alien vox effects at the end of the first track are so dope

Idk what's happening with Full of Hell but their recent stuff has been awful. Just jammed the split with Gasp and it's even worse than the last FOH full-length. Damn shame men, not even gonna try this one.

Yeah, the Gasp split was pretty much just meandering bs. A split that should have been amazing amounted to little more than shovelware.

Only they know of their plan and intent for the collab, if they were all happy and got what they aimed for, who are we to say they fucked up

I mean, fair. If they're happy with it, I'm happy for them, but as a huge fan, I can't help but feel underwhelmed when it really just sounded phoned in with little thought put in. Idk, it's kind of an intangible, but the energy/excitement was very much lacking throughout most of it. Gasp had some good moments, but it's clear that both bands have much more compelling work in them that didn't seem to make it to tape.
