i will probably end up enjoying this but i will say this much in line with the sentiment on the previous page:

I desperately wish Damon would go back to working with producers that capture the cultural zeitgeist at the time, a la Dan the Automator or Danger Mouse. I'm sure he keeps giving these projects to Kabaka Jr cause its a convenient enough working relationship but dude is just not a compelling producer

For serious though, I think that zeitgeist comment really sums up a lot. The blend of genres they were using were so much more interesting than the current ones

Song Machine is kinda the closest they've gotten to doing the genre spread thing since Plastic Beach, and that's probably just by virtue of the features being more disparate than they were on Humanz + The Now Now, and it being various separate sessions

Marvelous review! I'll put good money on my own take on this falling within spitting distance of yours, song machine had a real "is this band ever going to be a going concern again" vibe and not for nothing but this is the first time I've ever been able to totally tune out the leadup to a new Gorillaz album

I like song machine more than humanz or now now but take away Lost Chord and Aries and it's a pretty tight race tbh

kinda surprised Song Machine isn't getting much love itt. I think it's their best since Beach, and I loved Humanz

very good review btw as always. and I fully agree this project's ramshackle charm is always enough to carry it even when very little else is which is the case here. probably their second worst above Fall yet I can't bring myself to dislike it

Song Machine is easily their best since Plastic Beach, can’t really fathom thinking otherwise, especially considering the deluxe edition bonus tracks.

Judging by the singles so far this will be very solid, maybe around the level of The Now Now which I liked quite a bit.

“I desperately wish Damon would go back to working with producers that capture the cultural zeitgeist at the time, a la Dan the Automator or Danger Mouse.”

First three albums were singular in this regard, everything since has felt directionless in comparison. A smorgasbord of different pop stylings, often times derivative of sounds that aren’t even relevant to the current cultural zeitgeist. It feels like Damon is old and out of touch with what is going on in the music industry now and just aping on what he thinks is cool.

Didn't Albarn mostly do plastic beach himself?

Regardless, it does seem a bit like he's reaching a point where his connections and interests aren't quite close enough to the pulse of the charts to make for the kind of cheeky alt-pop #moments that powered their classics, it'd be nice to see Gorillaz bring on another Danger Mouse type for a full-album collaboration but on the other hand I wonder how many Danger Mouse types are around right now that really fit in the Gorillaz mileu

@kompy idk, but I was more following the line of “capturing the cultural zeitgeist” in general, regardless of who he is working with
