Wow this was such an improvement over the debut. His voice is tenfold better, and the female vocals really complement it. Great driving music, period.
'Tired of Feeling Good' is definitely going to be on repeat for me

Also, he ain't channeling Dwight Yoakam here, rather Merv Haggard (which is a good thing!)

So yeah, almost everything here has grown on me even more, right now it’s sitting at a super hard 4 - that does kind of feel like the “ceiling” here, perhaps because of a couple tracks holding it back a bit.
I’m thinking Josh Tillman would love to have written “Hard to Make a Living.”

I was a bit skeptical with Honey Harper tbh, but it's great stuff. Will go back to the debut as well.

the debut found more of a listening niche for me being a sleepytime country'ish album which helped it get a huge amount of repeat plays - this is just battling it out with everything else to get daytime spins and it's good, top 30 of the year even, but I know I won't play it as much as the debut.

A big part of Starmaker’s nostalgia for me was definitely the context - I spent a lot of 2020 doing ~essential~ rural bushfire remediation work with it (and lots of Neil Young) to keep me company on the long drives and late nights

Starmaker thrives off its dreamy, gazey aesthetic, which I think naturally lends itself well to an air of wistfulness, which can then transform itself into nostalgia. The fact it came at a point where many were left with little contact *probably* enhanced that; lot of alone time, lot of self-reflection and thoughts and such.

This is so cool, those smooth country guitar licks are defragmenting my metal-weary soul.

Did we officially reach the "Starmaker is overrated" cycle? Whew, took a while.
OK now that we're there, let's leave it behind
