The Pillows aren't one of Japan's best-selling bands. They're recognizable but have never really had any major success akin to the big pop/rock acts. They probably have about the same profile in Japan as bands like the Gin Blossoms or The Verve Pipe do in the US. Nevertheless, this is a great album.

Id start with this or Little Busters.

the FLCL soundtracks and Fool on the Planet are good too cuz you'll probably find it easier to get into songs you've already heard from the show, which you'll find on those records

yes but there are a couple of b-sides too. also some of the versions of songs on the soundtrack are different to the album version.
