"this band has always been aggressively melodramatic, it kind of feels like the point of the entire band" [2]
and mainly the reason why I gravitated to them in the first place and stuck around after more than a decade
"While they've dealt with dark subject matter their whole career, that album refused to let ANY light in"
I don't see how this is an issue

"What’s the deal with the shots at Will Yip? He produced Pale Horses the best mwY record"
Will Yip mixes either sound incredible or terrible, there is no in-between

Will Yip is a total coinflip, but when he's on he's on.
Sister Cities not letting any light in took away the juxtaposition of their sound and lyrics. The production is muffled and there aren't many signs of levity or optimism throughout the record, which the band typically does have a lot of. Yeah, they sing about depression and death and suicide and the crippling economy, but they also usually have songs about how much they love their family and friends and a couple of deceptively funny lines throughout. This band is great because they steered fully into the melodrama, but that's not their ONLY calling card

@Sloth: Without getting too sidetracked, the acoustic re-recording of the Menzingers' last album completely saved it for me. As soon as that dropped I never looked back.

Never listened to these guys but I'm guessing this is a good place to start?
|
| |
Well no that's not entire true, I heard a couple songs by them years and years ago and I'm pretty sure they had gang vocals which is a huge turnoff for me so I never bothered listening to an album

Loving this front to back. Up with Suburbia and TGG as my favourite TWY albums

Yeah this is great. I still prefer TGG though.

Hope it grows on me but I'm surprised by the positive reception, as this feels very paint-by-numbers for me

By egregious I just mean I don’t think they fit as well on NCTH. They were heading in a more alt rock direction and the gang vocals felt like a concession to pop punk that was shoehorned in sometimes.

lol Will Yip did Sister Cities? Insane that was done by a professional. The entire mix gets smashed to bits in Raining in Kyoto where it clips so hard in the chorus you very audibly hear it and I'm not buying that it was done for artistic effect.

The vocal harmonies in this are gorgeous. Add so many textures. One of the things that really makes this stand out in their discography for me

This might be their best. Gonna give it a few more listens first. But man every song hits every single time.
