Bitemarks as a Top 5? Whoa... I was always under the impression that one reason SHTS failed commercially was because they pushed the wrong song. Bitemarks felt more like a transition-period song from WIITB to SHTS, with its simple catchy chorus with a little of aggression.
Love this album, but there's way too much competition to put Bitemarks high for me. Insomniac, Casket, Ravenous, Hopeless, Miro, Brother, Piece of mind.. hell even their bonus track Gak 2 is better than Bitemarks.

i think some of the songwriting on here is awkward/not very good but some of these songs are great

This was gonna be a flop regardless because half of Finch's fanbase dont understand how good this is and STILL to this day dont appreciate it, and the label didn't wanna fully back this album either cus of how radically different it was from WIITB. It was a losing battle for them tbh.
Make no mistake tho, Bitemarks bangs.

True... and all songs bang on SHTS, obviously.
It always gets me wondering what made them deviate so much from their first successful sound though. This isn't even Deafheaven doing oh-we-can-do-BM-too new bermuda, this is just a completely different band altogether. Even Nate sounds way different from the first album

I would say its something along the lines of:
Make the sound that you can market well, while having the pieces of what you want to do in there in bits, and then now that you have the success, you have the freedom to do what you want to and explore what you really wanted to do all along.
They have that Mr. Bungle/Faith No More-ish Mike Patton worship in Wiitb, but they really let it fly in SHTS.

Yeah the spoken bits in SHTS screams Patton for sure.

True, true. While I absolutely adore SHTS, I just wish the band made a bit softer transition into SHTS sound so as to not have the whole fan crashing down on them like it did. Maybe an EP with Worms of the Earth, Bury me and such would have worked as a buffer... I just wish this album was appreciated more.

Spun this again today. Such a strong album where almost all the hooks here have stuck with me the past few years.

Wow I totally forgot this band existed. I used to listen to Dreams Of Psilocybin on repeat so much

I’ve thought for years that pushing Bitemarks as the lead single was an awful decision. I was in middle school back then and I remember the song kinda being a wet noodle anytime it was featured on MTV or Fuse. Miro would’ve made SUCH a great single… sigh
Fireflies and Bitemarks are the two weakest points on the album imo, only two tracks I find to be subpar

miro doesnt make sense as a single to me like at all. would def not have picked that to push this
a man alone however

Miro has arguably the most catchy chorus of the entire album, while being in a relatively short and palatable track. Bitemarks is far more brooding and overstays it’s welcome in comparison imo

Regardless speaking from firsthand experience- Bitemarks fucking flopped as a single

yeah idk to me its one of the least catchy hooks here lol pretty easily a weaker chorus here imo. great tune but it was one of the last i clicked with here. i think the jumps in tonic between each section would prob be too nonlinear for a single as well
