@swipenet nah it's not a meme. Their previous albums have been 4's as long as I can remember.

Kurt is definitely a dick. I saw them live In the UK years back, and they relied heavily on a backing track. Watch live footage of Kurt playing. Something is definitely off. Strong album though. Don't forget to check out Clint's other band Like Thieves.

I know it's been said already, but Fair To Midland isn't Australian, they're from Texas. The band's name is a play on the phrase "fair to middling" (meaning decent), just substituting the Texas city of Midland as a pun. They did tour with Karnivool, but that's about it.
If you want more Aussie prog from that era, though, there's Sleep Parade, Voyager, Caligula's Horse, and others.

Back half >>> front half
Best when it brings back Imago vibes

@CrazyBrave 1982 How does Like Thieves compare? I listened to Thousand Needles Red years ago and wasn't impressed at all.
@Masochist I'll check those. I did listened to Sleep Parade some time ago. Twelve Foot Ninja gets rarely thrown in with Aussie bands but it's probably one of the best for me also.
Now that the novelty has wear off a bit I'm lowering my rating. I just realized they removed the outro for "Wave of Tides" on all streaming platforms, which was the original version I listened to (it's still available on their YouTube visualizer, though). That little simple part made a difference for me.

Helm should’ve gotten way more hype. A very cool take on the aussie alt/prog sound. They basically fused it with post metal to create epic, catchy and atmospheric jams. The vocalist was awesome too. Strong voice and knew how to write a good hook. Glad to see them reform. Hopefully a fourth album soon (first three albums were all brilliant)

@unforgiven89 Sounds promising. I'll check them out as soon as I get home.

Yeah they’ve been posting stuff on their fb with them together jamming so hopefully it means new material.
Their cover of Great Southern Land is one of my favourite covers ever. Took an Aussie classic and completely reworked it to fit their sound. It’s better than the original imo and I love the original.

The first time I listened to the album I was totally blown away with the original tracklist. It made me forgive Nil by Mouth by that point. I don't know why it was changed, but I prefer it this way:
1. IV
2. Dark Light
3. So Tired
4. The Other Side
5. Wave of Tides
6. Nil by Mouth
7. Unbroken
8. Grear Heights
9. Start Again
10. Visiting Hours
Btw can you guys post Helm's social media? Can't find them.

Not near the rest of their catalogue but solid enough. Lost a bit of their unique sound here and missing Clint really extending like past albums.

Final track shows they still have it though

Great review man. I think we have similar tastes so definitely check out the self-titled album, by The Icarus Plan. It has former members of Drought/On A Dead Machine. They are like a mix of The Butterfly Effect, 10 Years, A Perfect Circle, Deftones, and esOterica.

@cb123 I dunno I love this side of the band as much as their proggy stuff (FCOK is my fav album by them).
@IamNOTninjaNICK Listening rn. Getting a lot of early Evans Blue and APC vives there. Thanks for the rec!

Interesting interview. It's also odd they spoke so well of FCOK and that the band's favorite songs now are "Worlds on Fire", "In a Memory" and "The End" and then went and did something totally different here.

I think the 'lazy' criticism of the album title is a bit lazy itself, or not lazy, but just too easy a criticism. You know i think its a good title, i like bands that title their album after the number of albums they've released.
I think its as good as any title so then to be critical of it is a bit too easy you know. Its fine.
Like they agree on the title and then people start calling it lazy, theyd be like oh god really? Gees we will try to come up with some fancy name for you next time then!?

I also stated "aptly" so I didn't mean it as a criticism at all.

I didn't like this album on first listen, but its growing on me. It's just a shame Clints voice will never compare to their debut Begins Here. His voice on songs like Beautiful Mine, Filling Silence and Without Wings is incredible.
Watching the doco explaining their breakup, the guitarist just came across as a jealous wanker.
A couple other Aussies bands worth mentioning in this conversation are Chaos Divine - The Human Connection and Arcane - Known/Learned (Caligulas Horse singers previous band)

^He does, doesn't he? I never got the "Clint's an asshole" thing, since he seems to be the nicest of the four.
I just got to read this comment but I'll check those other bands. Thanks!
