Down in the Weeds is what converted me to Bright Eyes, weirdly

That’s quite late to the party Sowing! That album has some very strong highlights as I remember…but if I think Bright Eyes ‘I’m Wide Awake’ will always be what I picture first

Yeah my understanding is that I absolutely need to hear I’m Wide Awake, at minimum. I’ll try to prioritize that at some point this year.

What makes it worse is that I was completely aware of BE and heard their classics, but still prefer Weeds 😁

Hmmm, maybe that album is due a revisit for me then.

Yeah Boney, that album is essential homework even if it doesn't change your life - it's a bit like 'Aeroplane Over the Sea' or 'Spiderland', if you are at all into 'indie' it is a must.

I'm Wide Awake has aged significantly and poorly enough that I don't think that comparison quite stands - think it's more a useful reference point for that generation of indie folk than a big shot in today's canon. 'Homework' is about it, though it has a few decent tunes

I first heard about Bright Eyes from the Questionable Content webcomic which was also where I first heard about Slint from so idk makes sense to me

I maintain they're sort of up there with The Shins as an indie/folk band you have to check from the '00s as a rite of passage if you're into that sort of genre and that's their biggest album...it's probably more essential than having to listen to 'Oh, Inverted World' imo, so it's a pretty major release, though Jonny may make a case against that assertion too I dunno :D

Tbh shins and bright eyes both do not seem to be hitting all that big with Kids These Days, at least not as much as Bon Iver, sufjan, Mountain Goats etc. Would put em both a cut above the iron and wine/decemberists tier of "kind of a big deal back when they had that one album", shins maybe a hair higher for the Garden State soundtrack
