Yeah both of those tracks are outstanding, especially I Know How to Speak. I always felt like that should have been the penultimate track instead of "The Parts", but I think that song helped keep the mood somber whereas I Know How to Speak might have been too optimistic and shifted the aura too much.
You can tell watching basically any video of them performing The Silence that it's the most important song to Andy. He seems to totally lose himself in it every time.

The silence performed live is insane. Even at a day time festival setting he absolutely lost it. Looked like he forgot there was even a crowd just wailing to himself.

Thanks Dewi/Shemson; I knew some people would miss the old review. It meant a lot to me at the time, but it no longer represented my views on the album. I could probably write a book on this album, so maybe I'll do another reframe in the future or more likely probably just a blog post when it turns a decade old in 2027, assuming me and this site are both still kickin'.

Yup, I know exactly what you're describing. Have you ever watched the Black Mile concert film that they released right before The Million Masks of God came out? It's not even necessarily their best performance of the song (still incredible), but I found the symbolism interesting - both of the church setting and then blacking out the image of Jesus right at the "there's nothing you keep" line. I think I came up with ideas for what I thought it meant at that time, but now I forget.

Amazing review, and a welcome update to your old one. I was just listening to The Silence again to see how it's held up, and it never ceases to amaze me... so incredible

"Imagine being the dad who names your kid "Jack"."
Hey, at least his last name isn't Antonoff. I can't imagine what kind of cruel parent would name their son Jack Anton Off

Thanks Koris! The Silence is absolutely one of the best songs I've heard in my entire life. At the very least, it is the one that has moved me the most emotionally.

sowing! you big lug. this album *is* the emotions you bring to it, that's why this is the best review of it
I Know How to Speak might be my favourite songs by these lads, pretty wild that they just dropped it with no fanfare one day

It was a pandemic show, so no audience energy, but still very good. If you don't have time for the full set, I def recommend watching The Silence and also finding The Alien/The Sunshine, which is easily the pinnacle of this performance IMO.

Manchester Orch is another band i attribute to Sowing for me liking. I started with this album knowing it's his fave; of the scant bit i've heard, it's really good stuff. Have to peep the rest of their discography tho
the callback to Southern Air made my heart full as well
