ahhh that makes way more sense
tbh thats exactly why i prefer them, i like bleak misery and oppression
this is almost a bit boring at times and i cant enjoy it nearly as often

Those albums are definitely intensely bleak and morbid but tbh I'm more likely to find those boring than this even though songs like drowning man, the figurehead, and Seventeen seconds are easily in my top 10 songs by them.
This one has a nice consistency but doesn't lean too hard on a single aspect and flows better for it. It's immensely satisfying to listen to as a whole while still delving into aspects the dark trilogy has but knows when to lighten the mood while still maintaining a brooding tinge to keep it in check so as not to make an abrupt shift in tone when we move from something like fascination Street to prayers for rain.
Everything feels so right with this. So in short perfect album for me no exaggeration.

I love Faith and Pornography but I definitely appreciate this more as a slow burn, and it definitely benefits from the lightness of touch it has over those two.
The way the songs set the picture for a few minutes and then Smith just steps in and surveys the scene is just sublime.

Head on the door has some undeniable jams. Kyoto song is a favorite of mine.

Head On The Door might be their catchiest album.
Also, shame on them for not calling their tour for that record "Head on the Tour".

A Night Like This probably has the best sax solo in music history

^Reeves Gabrels guitar solo for Night Like This blew away the original sax solo when I saw them last year. I know that this statement is blasphemous (but it’s true)

I believe it. They go all out for their shows from what I've seen of them.

giving this a fair spin finally. it hits this perfect stride of 80's synth pop and dreamy shoegaze. Prayers For Rain and the title track are definitely standouts.

T/t sure, Prayers for Rain not really...always felt like it’s one of the weakest moments on the record, still, the best album of all time

Pictures of You is bop for sure
also Fascination Street has that bass line that late-stage AFI keeps trying to recreate
