Ok so firstly, I liked the last album.
Secondly, yes, this is very deftones inspired, at first almost a little too much so, however....
Ive found with multiple listens, whilst the deftones influence is heavy, it does become its own thing as well.
I for one think this is a cooler sound, yes deftones have done it, but metalcore, who hasnt done that sound already a million times as well, i think this new sound gives them more scope.
Im happy with it and there are some really cool songs on here.
The Hellfire Club, Arkangel, Casanova, Heroine are all great.

Honestly fucking sick of seeing the "sounds like deftones" -argument by every metalcore kid who hears heavy music with * any atmosphere*. I've been reading the same line for the past 10 years now. It's like how our dad's generation claim that the Led Zeppelin owns the entire late 60's/70's rock sound, and put that band as a threshold for being/not being able to enjoy any other rock music made since.
I say all this without pointing out my subjective disgust towards Deftones. Probably only Nirvana and Metallica are more overrated in comparison to their lack of talent. That flat-earther pothead would probably break his 8-string guitar over trying to play the solo from Casanova

Man this would've been so much better without the constant distortion effects on the vocals.

yes the production on this is not my thing, incredibly compressed and noisy... there is no space for any instrument and the vocals suffer from it the most
I dislike the attempt at making a deftones album but it wouldn't mind as much if the production was different

I'm gonna be an oddball I think, but I really dig this. I enjoyed The Dark Pool more, sure, but this has something that keeps bringing me back. What I don't know is how much staying power it will have in my rotation, but either way, I'm digging this one.

just because someone sounds like a highly rated band doesn’t mean that they made something that deserves a high rating

Most modern bands that "sound like deftones" just sound like deftones – but better, though. Move on dinosaurs
