I think this is more unique than Obsidian in terms of the soundscape, and I can hear various influences of some amazing bands out there. Obsidian has just generic, soulless EDM synths slapped on top of boring asf riffs.
Heroine is just more sophisticated, apart from the often cringy lyrics.

the big obsiddy comparison doesnt rlly make any sense to me since they sound nothing alike but big obsiddy is way more layered and interesting than this, and arguably even has cooler riffs since its got all the cool harmonic shit where this is straight up just root notes the entire time

First few tracks in I was like oh cute they're copying Deftones but then it's basically every song they're copying some well known artist/style and it gets a bit tiring.
That said, overall I kinda like this album lol

I'm not sure I've ever been more disappointed in an album in my life. The Dark Pool is a masterpiece and one of my all time favs. This album is total garbage in comparison and just isn't anything like TDP. This album is is vastly inferior in every possible way.

Not sure why it posted my comment twice, but maybe it just needed to be said twice.
Seriously, if someone put this album on, I could have listened the way through and still not guessed it was Thornhill. Why? Because it's not. This is a band seperated for a year during Covid who tried to copy other bands because they couldn't get together like they were for the Dark Pool.
I am EXTREMELY disappointed because I LOVED TDP. And this couldn't be any further from it. There is not a single song on this album that I'd rate higher than ANY song they've previously made. Any of them, this album is complete and total garbage when you consider what this group is capable of.

yeah ive been jamming dark pool/butterfly a lot lately and this is a huge disappointment and plummet from everything theyd done before. worse than most deftones too like idk if this even tops gore
idk if its so bad that theyll never rebound from it as theres a few songs i kinda like. hellfire club, arkangel, blue velvet, the interlude and varsity hearts are decent (hell id go as far as to say i like hellfire club) and leather wings has some ok ideas too but theyre like, still nooowhere near dark pool quality and the horrid vocal prod places a low ceiling on their potential

I'm surprised by how thoroughly bad I found this. The vocalist on their last album was a strong point but he's almost unbearable for me here..The vocal melodies sound like random shit he came up with on the spot and often sound completely disconnected from the rest of the band.

yea his melody game is fuckin terrible here. the vocal prod is obv the biggest offender since hes absurdly clipping whenever he belts but the dude is j tunelessly meandering for a lot of the album and it really sinks it

I do agree the saturation is way too hard on the vocals. He actually sounds better live lol.
but yeah I can't stand Deftones so whatever, I dig this. The meandering I don't mind; he sort of uses his vocals as an instrument, and maybe that's why they also kinda buried it in the mix a bit
