New one will probably grow on me like RDF did. I wasn't crazy on that at first, felt a bit safe for EE but grown to love it. This isn't exactly pushing the envelope in the way their earlier material did, but I'm enjoying it nonetheless. Doesn't feel as "in your face" either for the most part, which I don't actually mind. Need a few more listens to really sit on a rating

Odal - I'll still listen to the new album a fair amount, and the tracks I really like a shit tonne

Same pattern as with RDF

I do agree with your point that if they edited things down they'd be more highly regarded. If they were churning out 9-10 song albums and then releasing supplementary EP's with the remaining tracks, I think Everything Everything would be THE rock band right now. They've definitely peaked with their ability to push boundaries, I think, but in lieu of revolution they've become really intelligent with their electronics and adding in almost hip-hop elements without it obviously being rap rock. It's clear that these guys could pen an 8/10 album in their sleep.

RDF felt like a return to form for me and I grew to adore it. Definitely gonna need some more spins with the new one.

You see I think 'Violent Sun' and 'In Birdsong' are probably stronger than everything on the new one, I do think the two albums after 'Get to Heaven' are maligned for not being as strong as that album and for being very Radiohead'ish...but I certainly wouldn't say this album is making a bigger impact on me than those. The opposite really, this is even less power, even more familiarity, and tbh some Radiohead/Coldplay'isms have snuck back in a bit on this one compared to RDF.

I don't think the lyrics are anywhere near as sharp as GtH - 'We've all become tomorrow's bacon...the customer is always right' this is some clunky stuff I'm sorry, sticks out badly.

Where they try newer territory on here they're great again though, the new one has an excellent album in there...yeah my main issue is editing/quality control making their full albums a bit of a repetitive slog. His vocals are great in places but again just blah and slightly grating in others, emphasised by the album length.

A lot of this new album feels like an extension of Software Greatman (which is one of my favourite songs from RDF) Very similar atmosphere and tone on this. Follows on nicely from RDF.

The two closers on the new album are really good too, they seem to know how to open and close an album well - I mean that's half the battle right there, they just need to edit down the rest imo.

The bacon line is pretty in line with what I have come to expect from their lyrics. They've always had quite a few eye-rolling lines, but I think it adds a touch of humor. I'd have to inspect the new one a bit more, didn't pay too close attention to the lyrics first go around. Do agree that familiarity is hurting them a bit, but there's worse things. Just gonna have to see where this new one settles because they don't have the element of surprise. The two after GtH are unfairly maligned for not reaching that high mark. I've found that my fondness for their albums usually increases over time so keeping that in mind, new one is on par at least.

Edit: the closing tracks are a definite highlight

They can get away with an intentionally goofy line if the surrounding music is well judged...but on that I just feel like I'm getting hammered over the head.

For sure there've been similar examples that have worked and not worked on previous albums.

RDF definitely has more bangers, I just finished my 3rd playthrough of Mountainhead and Spotify popped Hex on after and ughh, it just absolutely slaps. New album is sitting at a 4 with me right now, but usually atmospheric Everything Everything grows on me the most.

Fourth listen and the only song I’d probably bump up a tiny bit is ‘Enter the mirror’ though that’s balanced by not thinking quite as much of ‘R U Happy?’.

‘City Song’ is def top three (Cold Reactor would make top three, maybe either the opener or closer) and I like how fresh it sounds for the band.

A few songs I wanted to forward early, album is a bit of a ‘mid tempo assault’ at times, think it’s the point I can officially say I prefer RDF (which already had a few issues for me)

There are so few bands out there now who I think would genuinely warrant a full Greatest Hits album but EE are becoming one of them and that should read as a HUGE compliment - this album still has two or three hits, the last one maybe four or five…the band’s best fifteen hit songs are really impressive and tbh they’d flow well together, they’ve not changed things up that much in reality all said and done.

I kinda see where Doof is coming from.

RDF I can dissect into individual bangers, but MH flows better as a full album front to back.
