Wife played this today as she is a massive fan of Harry. I thought his debut was surprisingly pretty great and Fine Line has some great tracks here and there. This kind of seems predictable. He has his obvious influences and does a great job of incorporating many styles into his songs which goes over great with the general populace. But I just think the songwriting is a bit weak, but that’s kind of expected from A-List pop these days.
I just wish he would experiment even more and try to write songs that actually have an impact. A lot of what I’ve heard from him is really catchy on the surface but lacks a lot of depth. Idk I just hope for more from him.
Also so sick of hearing As It Was, such a bland track and imo one of Harry’s weakest songs. The 4-note synth melody carries that song so hard.

"struggling to create material that doesn't sound like One Direction leftover scraps" I don't think this is accurate, to be honest.
For example, while I think a lot of Liam Payne's music is fairly derivative of modern pop music, the influences are far different than what were on One Direction's material. Zayne Malik is also primarily working in contemporary R&B which, again, One Direction never really touched.
Louis Tomlinson probably makes the music I'd most closely associate with One Direction, particularly when looking at 1D's final album. Tracks like 'Hey Angel' were clearly inspired by Brit-pop in the same way that Louis Tomlinson's solo music is. In a way, I think the remaining members probably bonded most over that particular affinity for a sub-set of rock music. If I recall, that's one of the reasons Malik was disinterested in continuing.

Sowing, depends on what you didn't care for in Fine Line.
I think this is more consistent than Fine Line, but it doesn't have the highs of it. It could bump up to a 4 with a few more listens.

Vult, I agree even though I like it a good bit more than you. I think the first half of this album is pretty great (which is standard from his 3 albums) and then the middle starts to lose footing. I wish he experimented with horns and more of his rock influences in the second half because it starts to lose me there. Boyfriends and the closer are great, but I think they would've had more impact had he went a little harder before that.
Lyrically, I don't mind his songs. They don't really need impact (not what Harry is known for outside of a few ballads). It really boils down to the repetition that has hurt this and Fine Line.

I think this is consistently his best, but doesn't have any insane highs like his other albums do

I think 'Satellite' might be my favourite song of his, to be honest.

Is it just me tho, or does this just not seem very inspired at all?
I might bump down because this just seems very average for indie pop

That's kind of how I feel about all his music, to be fair. Hey this is like Bowie but less good or hey this is like The Rolling Stones but less good.
So some of this is a bit like psychedelic indie pop but...
Saying that, as the reviewer here mentioned, he's certainly a much more interesting and engaging artist than a lot of others, including his former band members.

Agreed about being better than the other band members, but then again I find that to be a pretty low bar

Yeah Satellite is a great song, but there are like 4 songs on here that sound like One Direction songs without the rest of the boys.

I feel like Louis Tomlinson's stuff sounds the most like later One Direction. Never got that feel with Payne or Malik, though. Largely because they draw less from pop-rock aesthetics and more from contemporary R&B.
